Disappointing. Such a ludicrous subsidy - they could just as easily offer direct support to "farmers and British industry" without getting them to buy and run grotesque vehicles.

A few days ago HMRC quietly removed the benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax exemption on double-cab pickup trucks, to treat them as cars rather than commercial vehicles. This would've meant that a 20% tax payer would pay £5017pa instead of £943 and for the higher rate £10034 instead £1886.

https://www.thp.co.uk/double-cab-pick-ups/

This huge subsidy has encouraged and subsidised small businesses, trades, etc to buy these dangerous, polluting and impractical vehicles. The load bed on them is smaller than the boot of a Mondeo Estate and completely open to thieves!

So, it seemed to good to be true when HMRC removed this exemption that was distorting the market - And it was!

After tiny violins from the fossil fuel industry and the manufacturers selling a 100,000 of these pickups each year, HMRC / UK government reversed the decision a few days later:

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/update-on-hmrc-double-cab-pick-up-guidance

For a moment I had some hope in the future of humanity. Silly me!
