Windy again yesterday. I had a look at the Forth Road Bridge website which said it was averaging 36mph and gusting to 52mph! My word is was windy on the bridge. I took a longer way home towards the bridge to avoid exposed areas of cycleway. On the bridge I was nearly blown off at the start of the bridge so I got off to walk. As I approached half way I was passed by a Guy on a Genisis Day One, orange with disk brakes, I had to have a close look as it was similar to my Cotic. Anyway I considered if he could I could. Anyway as we approached the second North tower we were both nearly blown off again and ended up walking off the bridge. The other cyclist said he wished the outside rail was higher as our higher centre of gravity could see us blown over into the Forth!
He lives in Spagety Bay as do I so I suppose I'll spot him again some time.

There was a nice massive drain-block puddle on PS westbound overlapping the cobbled tram-stop choke-point and making going through at least a bit of it necessary. Of course, to avoid drenching any pedestrians buses were swerving part-way into the right-hand lane, which makes it quite handy that most cyclists won't be in the right-hand lane going over the cobblybit.

Rode that way to work this morning to see if it had been shifted. Hilariously it looked like someone had come along and chainsawed about a foot off the tip, thus making it passible (if you walked in the mud off the side of the tarmac)

Bits of ride today reminded me of watching Kickstart as a yoof. At the airport had a choice of cycling through a three foot deep puddle or up a small river that was now running down the bike path.

Chose the river, bits of that were only calf deep. Glad I had overshoes on.

All in it wasn't actually that bad a ride :)

Looks like it's going to be a wee bit calmer come monday and tuesday. Actually had a corkin' cycle home on Friday night. Judged the wind right and went via Cramond and was blown the whole way home.

Coming up through the Trinity tunnel I had to screeh to a halt for a full size tree right across the path. Had to shoulder bike and clamber through it. Have clarenced it, so hopefully they'll get the chainsaws out. Shame though, it was quite a mature tree.

I thought I'd give the bike the night off and walk down to the pub last night in my not-cycling clothes - attempts at getting a bus were thwarted by a lack of non-paper money and the "frequency" (wrong word) of buses form Marchmont. Bad idea. I would have been much happier sitting in Bert's bar nursing my brewdog in lycra and waterproofs than drowned jeans and jumper.

On Calder Road last night I was pedalling quite hard just to stand still. My normal 30 minute commute home took an hour. I was late for normal friday night swim in High School pool and had to endure two hours in Bubbles Leisure Pool Livingston with 4 children. I may have mentioned this on another string.

The night before I was hit by a horizontal tsunami of rain on the open ground between Balerno and Currie. I was wet.

There is a flume at Bubbles that is completely dark inside. Darker than a black steer's tucus on a moonless night.

Post-war social housing of some sort - presumably 1970s when copper was cheap?

Possibly the ice earlier in the winter weakened it, especially at the edges, so that the wind could catch it and peel it back?

I came over the Slateford aqueduct at about 1730, and passed two cyclists on it (making three the grand total of cyclists I met between Gogar and Meggetland).

Anyway, for some reason none of us on the aqueduct had decided to cycle across it. We were all carefully obeying the 'please dismount' sign.

In my case this was because I started to cycle across it, but so nearly got blown into the canal that I rapidly dismounted and walked. I suspect the same might be true for the others...

As SRD says, there were whitecaps and quite big waves. There were also those flat bits you get where a gust of wind is pushing the water flat.

Under the bridges it felt like a giant hand was giving me a shove in the small of the back.

My ride home from Corstorphine was mostly OK, and reasonably wind assisted. I think I was early enough to miss the worst of the rain.
But Ashley Terrace, up and over the canal was insane, in fact I was blown off course into a side road, and had to wait my turn to pull out into the traffic again.

Interesting and very fast wind-assisted ride home. Couldn't really see the speedo but it was easily 26+ most of the time with minimal effort. Never went into the big ring all the way home. Thoroughly soaked through my "waterproof" gloves and "showerproof" jacket.

Was interesting as I pulled out of the carpark at work, didn't pedal and felt myself surging forward with the wind on my back into the stationary traffic and had to pull both brakes on.

I'm giving very serious consideration to getting the bus home.

I, on the other hand, gave absolutely no consideration to getting the bus, a taxi, a lift or anything.

Riding into the wind, in bottom gear at 7mph on flat ground, was just ridiculous. But riding at 28mph with a tailwind and almost no effort at all almost made up for it. Almost, because my mesh cycling shoes let all the rain in and my socks went soggy.
