“
The seat-by-seat breakdown of the poll, carried out for The National by Electoral Calculus and Find Out Now, suggests that apart from Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton winning in Edinburgh North Western and Labour’s Daniel Johnson holding on to Edinburgh Southern, all the rest of the constituencies in Edinburgh and the Lothians would be won by the SNP.

On the regional list, the Conservatives would keep only one of the three they won at the last Holyrood election, Labour would retain both of theirs, the Lib Dems would win one, as would Reform, and the Greens would retain both of theirs.

Yep that was the rationale.

Not least because whatever the ‘Party Politics’ there will be a LOT of new MSPs.

“
Polling analysis by Mark Diffley suggests these figures would translate into 63 seats for the SNP — two short of the 65 needed for an overall majority in the 129-seat parliament.

The other seat breakdown under Diffley’s projection would leave Labour with 18, Reform with 16, the Liberal Democrats with 14, the Conservatives with 11 and the Greens with 7.

Not agreeing a Scottish budget doesn't automatically result in an extraordinary general election. That only happens if two-thirds of MSPs vote for a motion to hold such an election.

Also, fun fact, if an extraordinary general election was held any time up until early November 2025, there would still be a general election in May 2026.

No political party wants (or can afford) to fight two general elections within a year. Over the years the Tories and Lib Dems have been the ones to get the SNP budget over the line, if they are offered suitable concessions there is no reason why one of them wouldn't do so again.

“

The prospect of an early Holyrood election dramatically escalated last night after the Scottish Greens said they were simply unable to trust the SNP when it comes to budget negotiations.

Speaking to The Herald, Lorna Slater said she was “absolutely” ready to bring down the government.

…

“The kind of things that we'll be asking for are not any sort of secret,” she added. “They're things like putting back the nature restoration funding, active travel funding, making sure that we can maintain the public sector pay settlement, the Scottish Child Payment, all the things that we worked on together when we were in government.

Of course you don’t have to wait until PoP to go on a ride or do a bit of campaigning -

You could go for a ride down the High Street to visit this poster at https://www.edinburghmuseums.org.uk/whats-on/pedal-power-cycling-and-activism-edinburgh (not a lot of cycle parking nearby…)

If you watch the video you’ll see some ‘classic’ black & white images that I’m glad I was there to record!

Just a reminder that if you go to PoP you could become Secretary of State for Scotland.

“if anyone would find that useful“

Think “useful” is your modest understatement…

If you have time to turn up, I hope the organisation will arrange a decorated throne on a cargo bike to lead the parade!

@ neddie

Yeah, CM has become something of a monthly mini-PoP.

Easier to organise, but still relying on volunteers.

CM & PoP have overlapping aims and organisers and participants in common.

Edinburgh has a wide range of groups, again - not just cycling ones, with common interests.

Glad to hear there are people who might be interested in makign POP happen again. Certainly happy to offer my own experience if anyone would find that useful. Although I'm somewhat out of the loop now, having refocused on local campaigning matters in Dumfries.

No need to apologise.

It’s all a bit random/premature/speculative/unknown at the moment.

While you wait, come along to the Critical Mass rides - last Saturday of every month. 2pm at the Compass on the Meadows

~250 riders on the last ride... starting to look a bit like a mini-PoP
