vs

“underlined the dependence on the car that's been created by successive planners, councils and governments”

Remember folks, dependency is the opposite of freedom. Break free!

Car or van trips for drivers increased by almost 8% year on year, and by 12% for passengers. The AA said it “underlined the importance of the car for personal mobility”, while the RAC said it was “abundantly clear that the private car remains the mode of choice for journeys over a mile in length”
I've noticed this argument that cars are 'the mode of choice' for 'personal mobility' come to the fore recently. More subtle than blatant anti-cyclist rhetoric, which the AA/RAC can now leave to online roasters. A siren call to politicians to side with the 'common sense' option, that all right thinking people take. After all, who would want to stifle 'personal mobility'.

Also, harder to counter at an instinctual level - if Brexit has taught us anything its that as soon as we have to make a detailed counter-point or get the stats out, the argument is already lost. Challenging times ahead I think.
