We have to play a Taskmaster game this Xmas. Normally, Mrs Garto would not countenance such frippery but as it emanates from her sisters - Normal rules do not apply. She has no idea what Taskmaster is [episodes available on Channel 4 catch up]

I agree she certainly built the newer steps Exhibit A
Or more likely rebuilt in cheaper materials but charged a fortune
No steps at the top but nasty surprise at the bottom if pushing a bike though I think the slope is too steep for pushing a bike at the top

Not the very top it starts gradual but then plummets

FYI @EJStubbs link was further to the East, OSM should have Jacobs Ladder mapped and names here:

Thanks @EJStubbs - indeed the flight of steps marked Jacob’s Ladder on your first link is correctly where Jacob’s Ladder is. The small path network to the east of Jacob’s ladder is all sloping path No Steps. That is what Illustrious leader posted a photo of.

Just doesn’t seem to have made it, in it’s entirety, to any maps I’ve got round to looking at!

Is it the one shown on Google Maps here? Also shown on OSM here which helpfully (for cyclists) indicates where there are steps as opposed to sloping path. Seems to have two access points on Regent Road and three on Calton Road. Or is there more to it than that?

‘I would add the Jinglin Geordie route up from Waverley is far more a flight of steps in two sections than a close.’

Only because of the mid-Victorian interloping of Cockburn St

Ironically, its eponym would probably have deplored said street

Jacob's Ladder is the set of steep steps running down next to St Andrew's House. It's a good spot for photographing trains leaving Waverley.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/PHt9qnPHLMHwn1n19

The other path that chdot posted is a bit to the east but also connects Regent Road and Calton Road, in about three different places.

There is another Jacob's Ladder that connects two sections of the Roslin Glen road, which doesn't have a footway north from the hairpin bend. The steps connect at the top with an offroady path that eventually brings you out next to the graveyard and the track down to Rosslyn Castle.

Continuing the tradition of fine municipal steps runnning north from the high street eg Plsyfair, Scotsman’s, Advocatess, Waverley, The News Steps, The Gin Palace on Cranston St has built a flight of steps up to Jeffrey St. Fine steps. See also Jacob’s Ladder though it is in another direction and less fine and Infirmary St which are shut due to Wino Parties.
