The puddle is a dried up husk. Two tiny splodges of mud like where the elephants would congregated if it was a watering hole on the Zambezi. Straight through the middle this afternoon. Some shocking potholes though. Something should be done about them instead of spending money on bike infra that nobody uses. Oh wait this is a tremendous bike route. Even the angler ceded to me on the descent. Gembo Rules. As SAHB nearly saiid. I hope Markus Stitz has put it in his gravel routes book but with an added climb of Everest to make it hard enough.

I was there yesterday.

Someone has dug a small lett on the fence side of the Big Puddle. Some of the water has indeed drained away, allowing the stepping stones to be revealed.

Sacrilege!

Ok, so it has been considerably downplayed [or if you like watered down from my original copy boom boom] but Spokes have deigned to mention the Notorious Puddle in their new booklet of Edinburgh and Livingston and haddington rides. Route 7 is where the puddle features.

No vandalism. Just the way the puddle has frozen with most of the ice to the south so a path has developed on the North side of the stepping stones and gives the stepping stones a clearer definition

I finally made the pilgrimage trying to follow Strava/Wahoo's approximation of @urcaidh's route. Queue was massive but I endured. Scone was as good as described although I couldn't finish it! Coffee was also pretty good too! Surprised I didn't see you @gembo.
My foot did indeed get wet despite using the stepping stones. Doggers and walkers out in force in the Pentlands and Blackford but no drama to report.

Back to full glory. Stepping stones merely way markers.
Big queue at Cafe.
Of note - AI just got the puddle’s location wrong. Saying it was after Clubbiedeans Reservoir but before the cafe.
Further a request has been made to Spokes for a gpx of the route. Spokes have their ever popular maps. But none of this moderne gpx rubbish.

Oh yeah and I HAVE AN ORDER for one of @Urchaidh’s t-shirts - size large but in Ladies. @urchaidh Canopy a week Friday??

@redmist my entire pitch for the Spokes Competition First Prize. Requires the puddle to be extant. There Iis a marked difffernece between the land that has tenant farmers on Primrose Roseberry land and when you get to Zara Philips properties which are maintained to a much swisher standard.

I came through there on Tuesday and I can report that the puddle is now in its autumn form ie across the width of the track with the "stepping stones" being the only option for dry feet if walking.
All joking aside this is a very popular walking route with all ages and I do feel sorry for people who have to try and get across this puddle on foot. It wouldn't take much to improve it - is it because its not actually part of the regional park that nothing is ever done ?

Wildlife highlights of the outing:
- a tiny wren whizzing across the track alongside Torduff then perching on a fence rail to show off its upturned tail
- a fairly large-looking buzzard soaring over a field near the CBP looking totally unperturbed by the half dozen or so mixed corvids trying to make its life difficult
- swallows and house martins whizzing about the house at the junction of Harlaw Road and Kirkgate (so much for my previous assertiona that they'd all be gone by now...)

I went through the middle the least frequent route I take.

Mini-Greenroofer is now 20 and about to start the third year of a medical degree, so not exactly 'mini' any more, I suppose. We reckoned on this ride that it was 10 years since Mini-G and Mini-SRD were preparing for Pedal for Scotland together. Where does the time go?

Filled in a bit even since yesterday afternnoon. We went round the outside on the right heading east, though the centre was an option then too. If muddier. Due to the strong westerly we were blown round and had time to kill so went up from WoL path at the old piggery [Waulkmill Loan] then down Newmills to the railway and over the crossing and round Gowanhill Farm and along the Long Dalmahoy to the road towards Kirknewton. We then hopped the stile before the quarry [the landowner/or wind has removed the sign saying Balerno 2 miles as I feel they are trying to stop you] alas about 50 metres. Along the road the path became very long grass so we retreated and were blown back along the long Dalmahoy to Currie.

The prediction was accurate though not heeded by the masses as the whole stretch of the Pentlands was very quiet. 1800-1930 hours . Currie and Balerno have their tea early and no commuters. We had one van at Cockburnhill turn then no traffic at all. At top of Cockburnhill Rd we said Howdy to the curious wifie fae Currie Co-op - she was headed to my secret bramble spot. All along the rig road was quiet. The Pods had at least one rental, but no one in the outdoor bathtubs. Then nary a soul til thriepmuir car park. The burnt down toilets are rebuilt but not open so may get repeat arson attack before anyone gets to sha-la-la in them. One family walking down to the Loch. No one all the way round to Harlaw. Again no one all the way to the Big Puddle. Still just a muddy patch where the puddle used to be. [slightly drier than the photo @Urchaidh posted upstream]. Round to Clubbiedeans, a couple of anglers, all the way down to the head of Torduff, one family, some young lads and a woman walking three dogs. On descent through Bonaly we detoured to see the Ferguson tractor [it predates the merger with Massey]. Then onto WoL path and home, a few dog walkers . Wind was very breezy but tailwind really until the WoL Path which is more sheltered.
