That really is what it comes down to isn't it. Why are they even allowed to build and sell cars that can achieve double the motorway speed limit? There are fringe cases where you might need more oomph - towing a trailer/caravan, or driving on a track - but 90% of people never do them and 99.99% of the time nobody is, so why are these fringe scenarios used as the baseline? I mean, we know why they *are*; political and social inertia, Muh Freedumb, it gives the car companies something to put in their adverts about how big and powerful their product is. But I've never seen an actual good reason.

All cars are ridiculously over-powered, regardless of driver.

50 horsepower should be enough for anyone!

I think young and newly qualified car drivers of any age should be restricted in their choice of vehicle in the same way as they would if driving a motorbike:

Four levels of driving entitlement: basic, level 1, level 2 and unrestricted.
A maximum permitted power of car and a maximum power-to-weight ratio for the first three levels.
Speed limiter for basic as 30mph and level 1 as 40mph.
A requirement to take further training in that type of car to advance to larger cars.
No passengers if only qualified to basic level.

Was watching 'Long Way Home' with yon Obi-wan Mcgregor and his pal Charlie and they had a chat in one of the nordics with a kid about a ban for young folks having passengers, speed limiters and also a sort of hazard triangle of shame required on the boot of the car. He'd filled the rear passenger seats with enough bass speakers to take out a garrison, naturally.
