We had a short break in Belfast during the summer, lots of flags still there, shame to see.

Our 10 year old boy likes flags, he has a collection from everywhere he's been on holiday proudly adorning his bedroom walls. soltire, rampant lion, union jack, Greek, Turkish, French and an American flag (though he's not been there).

Anyway we were in a shop in Belfast which was an equal opportunity flag seller of both persuasions. Boy quite liked the Union flag with the red hand and had bought it beofre we could explain to him what it meant. We had to strategically lose that flag on the way back to the accomodation...

Nationalists all like their flags. Scottish, English, UK nationalists.

Problem seems to be at the moment that different nationalists seem to like the same flag.

Flags have always been symbolic, Solitire, Union, Palestinian, Ukrainian, rainbow, plenty others as well over the years.

Personal view, you either leave them all, or tear them all down. Actually judging them all on a legal basis seems best approach, is it legally entitled to be there (for whatever reason), then leave it there, otherwise remove it.

Selective outrage amuses me. :)

Unfortunately the centre has been lost, there's just idiots to the left, and idiots to the right just now.

@gembo next time we can go together, I went out a few nights after spotting them, armed with a head torch and cutting devices, found they were down already, yes everything looks too much like brambles from the south east, maybe approach from the south west but no way I would make it all the way round there by the time I had walked the canal but I figure take a telescopic ladder (which I now need to purchase) for next time and walk over the canal having left all technology in the support vehicle along with towels and a change of clothes , I have overthought this mooohoooohahahahaaaa
Another thought was a small chef's torch attached to a telescopic tent/flag pole (oh the irony) but dripping burning nylon on the road below maybe not the best plan, the flags on the Calder road are now so many in number as to make that a long process too, again a sharpened hook on a retractible (read, legging it form the rozzers) might work (or again

All flags cut down already except for a small corner of a saltire
For future reference
Travelling west immediately at the end of the Scott Russell Aqueduct there is a path to the right that takes you over Bridge 9 and then skirts the outside of the salvage yard or whatever it is and down onto the aqueduct. I think then heading east you could take another desire line into the business east of the Scott Russell.

Do not take the path west of Bridge 9 as it is all brambles and nettles and thistles.

As I was in the mood for a recce. Bridge 10 where we used to congregate with the East Calder Massive for PoP is still accessible from the road that sort of ends at the Gold Bros. Warehouse of Total Tatt.

I seem to remember mooching around there during Covid. Pretty sure I turned up the rough track from the canal path and over Bridge 9.
Once on the other side I came out round the back of the office buildings. Was deserted then of course so no-one around to get antsy about it.

Two Union flags and three saltires. The flag cormoranters dont even know they should be charging Elon Musk who is funding the flags for Lion Rampants not. Saltires.

I do know a chap who used to cut through there to his office. So might ask him how to best go about it as I wouldnt wish to be abused like the council contractor in Stenhousemuir

A long enough set of ladders from the nearby B&Q might be enough to get a nimble person over, and if you keep the receipt you could take them back straight afterwards.

I think from the west is the way to go. I occasionally see people hanging out on the other side there. When did the flags go up there? I saw remains of some that had fortunately already been ripped down on the Slateford Aqueduct the other week but hadn't clocked any on Scott Russell.

What sort of flags?
It looks easier to sneak through from the west, going over the wee bridge by the dogwalking field then round the outside of the fences surrounding the warehousey/depot-lookng bits, rather than through the car parks of the houses to the north (thence beneath the aqueduct beside the road) or the offices to the south on the eastern side (which may be bounded by fences). Alternatively, befriend some rowers?
