Seen in the road report - planned cycle lane closure on Dundee street

Between Dundee Terrace and Coffin Lane
Building demolition
South footway closed. Cycle lane closed to accommodate temporary walkway
09/03/26	mid-April estimated

I think this is the car showroom and workwear shop. To be replaced with student flats.

https://www.urbanrealm.com/news/2024/02/09/gushet-student-flats-flaunt-their-curves/

Not cool for the less confident heading towards Diggers junction and quite short notice as the entry was only added to the road report today for a start on Monday!

So many things LSE should try to get CEC to sort.

So many things CEC should be able to deal with.

A good perspective here:

The usual crowd are pushing the idea the Equality Act makes floating bus stops unlawful. Of course it doesn’t. It doesn’t create a hierarchy of protected characteristics & floating bus stops have both accessibility benefits & risks to those within several protected groups that must be weighed

The Equality Act sets a framework for decision making in this situation which requires decisions are proportional, balanced, evidence-based & reasonable. It is unsurprising that real risk of death and exclusion of whole groups like children or users of mobility aids must be given significant weight

----

It's the usual reductive nonsense from people with an agenda that doesn't stand up to a moments scrutiny.

It’s incredible how successfully niche campaigners have been able to shut down debate - suggest it may be a bit more complex & you’re immediately accused of ableism. & also how people who should know better have fallen for seeing it as a ‘VI vs cyclists’ issue.

Certainly Living Streets Edinburgh has conflated shared-use bus boarders with floating bus stops and it wouldn't surprise me if Sight Scotland makes a similar error.

The former has much more potential for conflict than the latter but even so it's not clear that there's much of an evidence base for either having problems beyond those caused by poor implementation (e.g. Elm Row).

https://therantyhighwayman.blogspot.com/2021/10/floating-bus-stops.html

IF LSE said "fix these particular problems with the floating bus stop and here is how" I would believe they are arguing in good faith. But no, what we get is "floating bus stop BAAAAD".

Sauchiehall St in Glasgow has a bi-directional, segregated cycle lane. There are zebra crossings periodically. Between the cycle lane and the road are benches, Sheffield stands, trees – and bus stops.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/oLiGB42NDv9VFZiP9

Is that not a floating bus stop? I suppose one could hardly tell for all the blood and guts spilled everywhere.

Glasgow just got on and built it. But somehow 'Edinburgh is special'.

Well

“

In its submission to Edinburgh council’s consultation on the plans, Sight Scotland says it strongly supports active travel initiatives, but expresses “serious opposition” to floating bus stops, also known as bus stop bypasses.

“

That’s a constant opinion. Q is ‘are they right or unwilling to deal with evidence/facts?’

Ok

“
It says: “Compelling evidence demonstrates that these designs pose significant dangers to people with visual impairment, other disabled people and many other groups of pedestrians.

“

That’s good

Presume CEC has seen the evidence(?)

This seems to be a valid point of view

“

“The solution to conflict between users of bicycles and users of motor vehicle must not transfer the conflict zone to one between cyclists and pedestrians, particularly where this disproportionately impacts disabled people.”

“

I suspect ‘we’ can agree with that

BUT is this happening in this particular scheme.

It’s easy (and often justified) to suspect LSE’s motives and ‘anti-cycling’ extremes, but some other groups may have useful insights/suggestions.

Presume Spokes is talking with some of the ‘interest groups’?

It would be nice to think they work together to improve this and other CEC schemes…

“Of course, Blackford Safer Routes exists in its current form to defend active travel provision due to Arthur's sleekit convenorship of the Transport Committee coming for 'their' area...”

SA’s actions over the years have been genuinely shocking.

‘I’m a cyclist (when not on the front seat of a bus)’ hasn’t translated into ‘I’ll do my best to accelerate the sluggish progress (over decades) for people who (try to) get around conveniently and safely by means other than personal motors.

Wasn’t expecting him to become an advocate for road pricing or anything ‘too radical’ but the extent to which he’s pandered to those who want to drive quickly between two points and park outside their houses instead of on their drives is (mostly) unfathomable.

‘I’ll get a few more votes’ isn’t a convincing explanation for his actions and mantras about ‘it’s for local people to decide’.

CCE used to have threads/lists of what c/should be fixed…

Now ‘we’ are stuck in an endless cycle of trying to make sure things don’t get worse.

There was a time when it was possible to talk to individual Cllrs in the hope they’d listen, understand and talk to officials.

There have been (and still are) good officials. Sometimes with good bosses and (with luck) enthusiastic/positive/committed lead Cllrs.

Now they have fewer colleagues, smaller budgets, more things that need doing and absurd amounts of consultations/responses to deal with.

And they (and ‘we’) have to be concerned about consultant firms and whether or not they will put the most junior staff on projects…

All this would be somewhat understandable if Jacobs were some remote never-been-to-the-neighbourhood entity, but their EH office is (checks notes) 160 Dundee St, Fountainbridge, Edinburgh...

Should have read through this before making my notes and filling it in, as I only noticed Jacobs on the map when peering at the Telfer Subway section of the plans. Their name is known from previous consultations but I'd have rootle about in some old PDFs on an external drive to check which - are they maybe the creators of the Cyclist Blender, or are inset road-crossings like on the CCWEL or the 90° twists like on the St Leonard's Street route amongst their characteristic flourishes? One of my PLEASE bits when I was getting exasperated towards the end was asking them to make sure kerb-constrained lanes are wide enough for gritters/brush-wagons and non-standard wide/long/>2-wheeled cycles. Another PLEASE was to not plan reasonable/improved infra but then knacker it with a forest of ill-placed crossing-button poles and sign supports which weren't on the consultation designs.

It's also interesting that the metal utility-cupboard is gone from the bi-directional bit in front of Fountain Park opposite Gibson Terrace. If these can be moved, then they can be moved from other places, like the one making a pinch-point near the Bankhead tram-stop.

@chdot

Drysdale Road already the way to go from WAR crossing with any longer bike. Shame though they discouraged / hid thevroute by dropping giant planters on it!

The answer of course was to continue the cycle route from Roseburn and install a cycle crossing at the already signalled junction. This would be cheaper than endless consultants reports and meet with requirements of hand cyclists straight away avoiding stupidly tight zig zags.

I walked through the new Leamington block between the canal and Dundee St. This has a zig zag 'hanging garden' ramp but really aimed at residents. Cyclists will soon be able to go diagonally down from lift bridge once a route without a staircase is built (!)

Wouldn’t even need to go up the zigzags.

Just back along other side of WAR to Drysdale Road.

Why that verge hasn’t been a path for decades is a mystery/standard CEC practice.

I reckon the easiest solution to the Telfer subway issue is to continue the cycle lane along the WAR to the next crossing (Morrison Crescent). There is a nice clear verge that could be used, which the Council probably already owns. While a bit tight, the ramp at that crossing is far easier to get up than the telfer subway steps/ramp.

Like Arellcat I've also done the consultation and highlighted the issue with the partially ramped steps from the Telfer Subway up to Dundee St.
These seem to have been missed by both this project and the Roseburn to Union canal project where the Toucan crossing across the WAR ends. This dumps me on my handcycle at the bottom of these steps which aren't sufficiently ramped so I ground and cannot use them.
I raised this with the project team at the grand opening in December 2024 and followed up (as requested by them) with emails but got no response.
Unfortunately, without an improvement to the route to Dundee Street from the Telfer Subway I'll still have to handcycle along Gorgie Road and Henderson Terrace to get to Dundee Street.

I did the consultation, and was strongly supportive for everything except Telfer Subway egress onto Dundee St which may be cycle infra but it still needs improvement (and is probably insoluble).
