Just had a shot on the lovely Helios tandem thanks to SRD. The kids LOVED it. It's a really great smooth ride. Specially when I'm used to a wobbly trailgator.

The Bike Station does have one covertible family trike /pram.

Zigo I think or similar

Zigo Family Trike

Laid Back Bikes at Bike Works can get this easily.

However it is more than Helios tandem price wise and is heavier with one less gear. Horses for courses etc. Velorbis also do a family load carrying trike that I can get hold of in theory.

Two wheeled favourite in Amsterdam is the Bakfiets and the Onderwater Tandem Onderwater Fietsen

Aroud £1700 here but does have lights. Fitting a SON to the Helios though is not a problem - just that the UK market looks at hub lights as a luxury item. Odd as bikes here have to mix with cars and buses to a much higher degree.

I'd hoped the bike station would get in some of these - like the ones that are basically pushchairs attached to bikes etc, as part of their family/commuting scheme but no go.

I just did a search on Google images and found some awesome-looking bikes: Link. No idea how to get them in Edinburgh, but some inspiration perhaps!

You could get a couple of bairns in the basket? I've seen a similar craft with a bench seat on the back for 2 kids - that may be your friend.

You see a lot of tag-along bikes. There's one poor boy we sometimes spy from PY being dragged rather grudgingly up Middle Meadow Walk to Heriot's.

I've seen a couple of examples of 2 childseats on a "regular" bike, i.e. one off the seatpost and one off the toptube infront of the adult.

I'm looking for examples in Edinburgh of unusual/interesting, practical, compact bikes for transporting children.

There's SRD with her wonderful Helios and my friend with the Pashley trike, but can anyone suggest any others?

Many thanks
