"In America, 40% of the corn crop is currently diverted to make fuel for cars."

What's the carbon footprint of this thread?

It depends on whether you're reading it, reading it plus the linked articles, whether you're also replying to it, what device you're using to access the forum, and how long each of those options takes.

It took me 2'25" to read this thread down to kaputnik's environ-twaddle comment, but not reading the articles, and this reply has taken 4'36" to write. Given that the computer and monitor I'm using right now draws a nice steady 90W, the energy requirement for this thread for me has been 0.0105kWh, and using the latest Defra grid purchased electricity conversion factor of 0.53936 kgCO2/kWh, I make that about 5.7 grammes of CO2.

That mass of CO2 is equivalent to driving a Bentley Mulsanne 14 metres.

Guardian Edinburgh doesn't half repost a lot of enviro-twaddle sometimes. I'm still miffed they never responded to my long email pointing out some factual innacuracies in how they portrated Edinburgh as having the 3rd-highest CO2 emmissions per capita in the UK - it was in the Evening News, it must be true!

"Are we not just as likely to spend the money on carbon friendly products?"

Well that depends...

Apart from definitions of "carbon friendly products" I assume (not read it!) the point of the report is to do with human psychologies and actions and it's pointing out that things are not simple or linear.

A lot of the 'debate' around 'carbon neutral', 'sustainable energy' etc. seems to revolve around the notion of how 'we' (usually the 'affluent' 'west') can do (more of) the same using less oil/coal and (especially) feel less guilty about whatever we do/buy.

It's not that long since carbon trading/offset and turning food growing (or rainforest) land into production for 'bio-fuels' were seen as good/sustainable/way to go.

There are few certainties - 'death and (more) taxes'.

Whatever the views/truths ARE about Global Warming, Peak Oil, population growth, food production/distribution, Sustainable Growth, Development, Capitalism, Consumerism, human rights, equity, fairness etc. etc. there is no 'simple' answer!

I'm not sure I can see the premise of this study as being anything other than a bit pointless. The idea that if we save money by implementing some carbon saving measure we are at risk of spending that money on some carbon loaded product seems to just be scaremongering if anything.
Are we not just as likely to spend the money on carbon friendly products?

It's quite difficult to find actual imported lager most of the import brands are made by inbev in England. Probably just SnN to avoid since they off shored mccewans.

Come to think about it there is no reason not to just drink caley..

I thought this was going to offer advice about fititng a fork with a carbon steerer. £3.35 for a bottle of Corona? These "experts" obviously drink in the wrong sort of pubs!

"It has been calculated by environmental experts that one single bottle of imported beer uses 900g of CO2 - wiping out two-thirds of the annual carbon savings made by replacing all light bulbs in an average home with energy-saving models."
