I've ridden through Newcastleton. It's a lovely part of the world. Hilly though so that 80 miles would be hard.

Some good riding on very quiet roads around Newcastleton - I've been wanting to head down there for a while. This initiative makes it even more attractive. :)

Perhaps they meant motorcyclists? There's plenty of camp sites that seem to have no motorcyclists / non-family groups of more x persons / all same-sex groups sort of restrictions.

I think like some B&Bs such small businesses are often reflections of their proprietor's previous experience with / prejudice against such groups.

Might not be illegal under equalities law but the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 does give cyclists very broad access rights to travel across private land in Scotland. There are restrictions on accessing land that was subject to a charge prior to 2001 (which might apply here) and you have to give tents a wide enough berth to afford the people in them privacy.

Regardless of the legality - why would a campsite ban cyclists, particularly in an area popular with cycle tourists? Bad business decision or what?

Actually Newcastleton is only about 80 miles, if theres a good campsite nearby it would make a nice weekend!

steveo: Send it in to the equalities commission, imagine if it said "no ....."

Sadly as a self-selecting minority I expect cyclists are not covered.

I noticed a campsite on the way to North Berwick with 'No Cyclists' on a sign outside... same stretch where I was deliberately passed too close by a huge range rover...

Who's for Newcastleton? Well done them. There's certain east lothian destinations in easy cake-distance of Edinburgh that should take note.
