back on the subject of visibility - almost ran into the back of a cycling chicist at Gilmour Place on an old semi-step-through road bike without any lighting. I didn't see her luminous ankle strap that was to stop her her bell bottoms getting in amongst the machinery.

Very misty in Balerno earlier, but it cleared towards West Calder and Fauldhouse. It was a bit misty going over the infamous Col du Climpy (but you'd expect that due to the extreme altitude) and then clear again through Forth and Carnwath. The really freezing stuff was encountered again about 15km out of Balerno.

All of the roads were fine though - no slippiness encountered,

I got the train but cycled to the station. I live in Fife and didn't realise it was icy, only foggy. The rear wheel stepped out at one point when I was climbing the hill to the Station. I didn't come off but it was weird, I've never had that before.

I think we were kidding ourselves if we thought Spring was here - last year we had heavy snow in April.

Perhaps the council plan to leave all the grit on the roads makes sense now..............

I got the bus today. The thought of what icy roads and foggy fog would do to driving standards made me chicken out.

One of the cars managed to flatten a traffic light completely, and that was behind the coned off area. Must've been well out of control.

Gogar roundabout sees five cars damaged in just two hours

The way the article reads the area wasn't gritted. I've never experienced cars driving too fast or without due care and attention there...

Hi there cc - the Grange was definitely treacherous. I found the pavements worse than road though - nearly went over when walking bike around roadworks someone mentioned yesterday!

Visibility appaling out west. Side streets slidy again, not ice but a sort of smooth coating of frost. Felt the back end try to move out for a fall a couple of times but took it very slowly and managed to stay upright. Thankfully it's half term so the usual Gylemuir Primary school-run dodgems and double-yellow parkers gauntlet weren't around

Quite a few cycles without lights and also quite a few motors without lights as well-very dangerous. I was supposed to be running this morning but found the pavements so slippery I just got the bus and will run home instead-assuming it is a bit less slippery!

It seems to be clearing slowly in the city centre, but yes, would recommend lights or hi-vis stuff. The traffic lights at the top of Broughton Street are or were out as well, which isn't going to help! (there was a police officer directing traffic when I passed, about 10am)

Exposed areas with little traffic were still frosty but only the corners inside cars' turning circles elsewhere. I could see some droplets forming on my eyelashes but they didn't freeze. I fortuitously took a route where all my right turns were at junctions with no oncoming traffic stream.

Depressingly few cycles I passed thought it might have been wise to have lights on despite being daylight.

Mabs - down here its not too bad, higher ground very slippy indeed.

I stopped at Marchmont road crossing and put lights on, didn't need them in the slightest when I set out though.

About an hour ago the minor roads were covered in black ice - something I didn't realise until I tried to go round a corner, and went over (see the Min thread!). Even when I stood up I had to do a comical slippy-dance in the middle of the road just to stay on my feet.
I'd say stick to main roads and risk the idiot drivers, or find another method of transport - the minor roads I tried were ungritted and dangerous.

What are the surfaces like? Roofs etc here are frozen but can't tell what the ground's like from the flat.2

...is bad! fog/freezing fog not helped by misted/frozen glasses! worst visibility i can recall here with exception of total downpour. nearly pulled across dalkeith road into path of ocoming grey car with minimal lighting - had been watching traffic v carefully, but just could not see this car. scary!
