I sometimes wonder if almost everyone on there is a parody account.

Surely the level of ignorance and prejudice that this lot exhibit on EVERY story they comment on can't be real, can it?!

There seems to be a trend going on in the EEN commentariat of someone (or some people) creating a kind of parody account for each of the other regular posters e.g.:

Man The Barricades -> Mandy Barricades
samlang -> spamlang
On The Ball -> On the Bile
heyheyhey -> gaygaygay
Scott Mann -> Scott Woman
exercise dodger -> exercise todger

Not sure if this is a new phenomena or not...?

"

Local media tend to look for negative notes to attract readership. They tend to be small editorial and journalist teams that do not follow stories though in as much detail. The result is that they tend to report negatively and with factual mistakes. This puts massive pressure on local politicians. Cycling is even more adversely affected as cycling schemes are rare and misunderstood.

"

@snowy That is unfair, the comment bot is triggered but when the public reply they have to do a short multiplication test to prove not bot or else we would get an infinite loop of bots talking to each other?

There is a famous counselling bot that just repeats back to you what you said (maybe switches active to passive sebtence structure). Was very popular on Internet. Some people talking to it for up to two hours. Maybe they were bots too

Quite often it's glaringly obvious that comments have been written without the story being read, even just in part.

Comment bots are now a proper 'thing', apparently. As in, keywords in an article are likely to lead to the comment bot contributing a related, inflammatory remark, to seed discussions in the advocated direction.

Some are obvious, but some are very realistic.

Most of them are probably several IQ points above a regular EEN commentator. (sorry)

Norway news site checks you read the story before commenting

...there's a reason why many news sites have abandoned comments sections altogether, and it's often because they provide little of merit. That's not to say readers don't have thoughtful views on the stories covered, but more that commenters aren't actually readers at all. Quite often it's glaringly obvious that comments have been written without the story being read, even just in part.

and yet, and yet, they might just fluke it despite their best efforts(!)
Almost every month I seem to see an increase in the number of bicycles about, sales figures keep improving, every new bit of bicycle parking seems to fill up and the ranters on the een are slowly starting to sound more and more like the loonies who everyone ignores in the pub :-) I don't know if it's the recession, marketing, olympic success, congestion, public profile, health worries, improved image, probably a mixture of most of these things and the more it builds the easier it is for it to be "normal". We are even at the point where I read of complaints about bicycle "congestion" on the canal towpath, and I promise if that'd been mentioned fifteen or twenty years ago everyone in the room would have laughed! Not there yet, but Edinburgh is changing (even though you need an all terrain bike to navigate it in any comfort, sigh) fingers crossed it snowballs :)

"The councils 15% target is laudable, but not sure how we will attract more bods given the current bike infrastructure."

Well yes.

Part of me is glad that they are still talking about 15% AND "by 2020" (if the ENews is to be believed. I think there was a backtrack to this being an "aspiration" rather than a "commitment" a while ago).

The rest of me knows that there is no chance (please prove me wrong CEC) without a change of attitude/practice by various bits of the council - AND more money.

Meanwhile the 'long suffering motorists'/'hard pressed retailers' get wound up and people who cycle (or want to) find it difficult to back the council wholeheartedly as (in things like this) they get the 'blame' without many of the 'promised benefits'.

CEC could of course keep drivers AND bike riders happy by fixing the potholes and other road defects.

Being brutally honest, unless you are fairly streetwise, cycling in town (especially when it is dark / gloomy) can on occasion be dangerous.

Where a bus lane is not in place, however, I'm in two minds as to whether I think there should be a clearway or not - if we allowed rush hour parking the congestion would immediately be so terrible that bikes would be the only sane way to get to work! :)

Adjustments for internet presence and the increase of the War On Motorists mentality aside, was the EEN any less offhandedly incendiary before it shifted to Holyrood, perhaps causing more staff to feel the need to drive in or otherwise complicating their journeys?

Well at least there is one person who 'understands'.

"
As a motorist I object to people parking on Morningside Road and Brunstfield Place during peak hours. It's a main arterial route and should be kept as clear as possible for motorists AND cyclists.

Increasing the short stay off-main-road parking would surely be the best solution for everyone?

But the thing that gets on my thrupennies the most is the telling of the story. The council stated that the issues were buses, emergency vehicles and also cyclists.

Guess which one the EEN picks up on to target? Quite pathetic really.

Aargh, must...resist...!

I still like to read Anth's exposition of being a member of a disliked minority. The scary thing about the EEN anti-bike brigade is that behind the barbed comments are real people, and most of them will be car drivers sharing space with us.

The trolls are really scoffing. Chance of riding onthe pavement in Bruntsfield Place is nil; that florist covers most of it. Nothing about the delivery lorries blocking sightlines at the top of Viewforth etc either. Apparently local residents need to drive to these shops; if they are local, why the need to drive?
