I've raced Richard (Chapmam) in a car to Mussleburgh on the rule we couldn't speed. Despite the 40mph zones he wasn't far behind us... Definitely not typical....

Ouch, that's fast!

The ERI time is do-able, in a world without traffic lights - I'd have thought you could spend at least 15 minutes waiting at lights during rush hour though!

Good times... limit of path speed though I think.

You never did the commuter challenge (before you had LB bike)? If you had you'd have been discouraged from entering again (just too fast and not representative of the kind of bike people should use;-)

Rich B did ERI to St Andrew Square in 16mins on a 'bent in 2009.
R Chapman did Gogar to city centre in around 20mins on a road bike (ex Scottish Commonwealth games team so not typical either of course). He actually outpaced the airport bus.

Today I was officially naughty, and pushed it down the path (although I still stopped a couple of times for a wobbly cyclist and a dog). Also the lights were near *perfect*.

to Roseburn (3.5 miles) - 12:54 (12:18 moving), average 16.2mph (17.0mph)
Roseburn path (4.25 miles) - 10:44, average 23.7mph
to Leith Links (1.4 miles) - 04:30 (04:23), average 18.5 (19.1)

Total journey time 28:09 for just over 9 miles.

Once you start going fast, and I wasn't hammering flat out, you see the limitations of the path. I counted 7 points at which you'd have extremely short notice of a pile-up.

Well, I was on the relaxed bike, although my legs didn't feel too relaxed!

I felt it coming back home. Same route took 10 minutes longer...

I lobbed off about 2 minutes from my PB when I got a call to say my wife was in labour with #2, one sunny afternoon 19 months ago. I rode like a nutter from Leith to Gilmore Place in 15 minutes! I did not jump red lights or ride on the pavements, if any EEN commentators are reading... It was a legitimate record! In the end I made it with 30 minutes to spare though.

Well, it is downhill!

Back in the day I could get 17 miles to work in Dunfermline in just over 50 minutes. I was a lot fitter then though!

The lights can play a big part, but even still that's an averaga speed of over 19mph is it not? Pretty good going!

Wingpig - 12:16 for 3.5 miles on the road, then 12:43 for 4.3 miles on the path.

Yep to the route - got it in one.

I only had to wait for a moment at Morningside road, and again to join Polwarth Terrace, then at the bottom of Ardmillan road, so the lights played a big part.

It'd be interesting to see the split between roads and off-roads. What route did you take from KB to Roseburn? West Mains/Charterhall/Cluny then through the back to cross the canal at Harrison Road?

My favourite thing to have done on the north path network was to beat my car-driving wife from Matalan at Seafield to Matalan at Slateford.

"It will be a shame when this is a tram expressway"

It would.

If it were ever to come to pass.

I'm still not placing bets on Airport to anywhere running.

(Latest rumble)

IF that happens, there will be a fight over 'Newhaven as planned' or ERI/QMU.

AFTER that Roseburn might be considered - but there would be a lot more pressure to make it serve the Western which might mean on-road only/mostly.

I've mentioned before that I prefer not to use the Roseburn in winter due to all the light war stuff (even though I have a Germanic horizontal-beam cutoff light).

I just realised it's suddenly quite light these days, even early on. So this morning, off I went, and set a new PB for getting from King's Buildings to Ocean Terminal (elapsed time) of 24:59 - not bad for 7.8 miles in rush hour, as I'd budget over 20 minutes to do the 4 miles direct.

Even better, I wasn't racing on the Roseburn - in fact, I descended at only the same speed I've previously ridden up, resisting the strong temptation to go at Ludicrous Speed.

It will be a shame when this is a tram expressway with canal-style congestion and lack of space.

That's it really - a sort of spontaneous huzzah for the Roseburn post.
