Yip, cb's spot on - there was a report on the news or some programme like Tomorrow's World or something (so years and years back) that inside a car the pollutants get trapped and therefore build up to be a lot higher level than outside the car. Even in modern cars this is still the case. Much better off outside the car...

Found this:

http://www.thegoodairlady.com/car_air_pollution_000219.html

"Even when local air quality testing reports are "green", the air you are breathing in your car may be very "red" -- up to ten times as polluted as the air on the other side of your windshield."

The study it refers to:

http://www.arb.ca.gov/research/abstracts/95-339.htm

Well, yes, but -

I suspect air in cars is much more polluted than most people realise.

chdot: You have a point, but even if the air inside the car was equally as polluted as that outside, the exercising cyclist will be respiring at a faster rate than the driver, so more air (and therefore more particulates) will go into the cyclist's lungs than the drivers. Quite what adverse impact that has on the cyclist's health (compared to the benefits of regular exercise that the cyclist doubtless enjoys) is moot...

I would like to see a study that 'proves' that air intakes feet behind the exhaust pipe in front are so well filtered that the air inside the car is 'cleaner' than it is five feet or so off the ground where most cyclists and pedestrians breath.

What a dreary and desperate old rag the Daily Fail is. However, I *would* like to see a proper study that compares the intake of airborne pollutants in (i) cyclists that regularly commute in heavy traffic versus (ii) those who have similar commutes along cycle paths (or who can somehow avoid heavy traffic). I think it could help make a case for a cycle route network that has, as part of its remit, the specified aim of putting a healthy (pun intended) distance between cyclists and the rush hour fug-fest.

Regardless, the Mail is still pants.

The Daily Mail was at it again last week panning cycling. Claiming that cycling was bad for you in more ways than smoking, drinking to excess and sitting in traffic inhaling exhaust fumes. Good to see that the response to debunk the nonsense has been swift.
