What I like about the Steiner school - including the Christmas Fair - is that the kids actually DO the stuff. So, on normal school days one actually sees them working on keeping the grounds clean, tidy etc. I _really_ like that! And at the fair, they have obviously contributed to/planned many of the events/stalls.

I've been to a couple of Christmas Fairs at Steiners and was pretty impressed. Compared to another Christmas Fair I've been to (serveral times; certain church in Edinburgh), the Steiners one seemed to be designed around and aimed mainly at children, whereas the other one was designed to raise as MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE - children just get in the way. The extravagent hamper exchange programme (i.e. donate hamper items, buy lots of raffle tickets, then win one of the many hampers) was particularly depressing.

think of it not as thread-hijack but as keeping SRD's original post at the top of the forum by some slightly off-topic tangential discussion!

"Surely you might have got an ASBO or something?"

Just what I was thinking - on the parents of course.

I knew a parent who took the same line (don't think he was Steiner) - not pretty.

Of course my children were given firm parameters and have turned out fairly well adjusted and quite creative too.

And of course I'm not impressed by 'cottonwooling parents' who see danger everywhere outside the front door...

I genuinely think that people who cycle have a better balanced view about 'risk'.

But I might be wrong...

We still had to live there - placing your neighbours under an ASBO wouldn't necessarily have made living there any more stress free!

It's actually very very hard to put into words just how negative an impact it had on every single aspect of our lives. One of those 'unless you've been through it you'll probably not understand' things. The amount of times people said to us 'It's just kids playing, it's what they do'. And then they came round. And experienced it.

Anyway, total thread hijack!

Surely you might have got an ASBO or something? I had some friends who lived in a flat in Marchmont who were threatened by the council because the chap below could hear them walking about (!!).

I have this natural reaction to hearing the words 'Rudolf Steiner' that involves a shudder and dark thoughts. Entirely unfair on the school itself, but based on a horrific 9 months in a house above a family whose two kids went to Steiner and were given licence to run absolute riot because you don't want to 'stifle' a child's creativity.

The constant noise, and lack of any response from the parents to either the children or us, almost split Mel and me up, and after an expensive sound engineer report to see if we could do anything (nope) we were lucky to get sold when we did.

So actually, the chance of bumping into them again rules out any chance of attending!
