Unfortunately, it's also those very streets that would benefit from being car free to create an attractive "continental" atmosphere that might encourage more people into the centre of town in the evening.</p> <p>I've never quite understood why UK shops stubbornly stick to the 9-5 opening hours. Surely the majority of potential customers are at work between 9 and 5, so ain't going to be shopping. There just isn't a good pitch on princess street, not for a decent size show.
