Work well underway - inc interesting kerbs with integral drainage that I've not see before -

Open to bikes.

As usual, leads to the question - 'if cars can do without it for 6 weeks(?)'!

And there are some very nice raspberries about half way from the beginning of the path to the bypass.

I presume the "Diversion route in operation in both directions and signed via Lang Loan and A720 City Bypass" is not for cycle traffic (as cycling is normally banned on the A720), and that another alternative route (for cyclists) should also be available?

It is currently anticipated that work on this scheme will commence on site on Monday 29th June 2015, and will last for a maximum of six weeks.

In order to facilitate these works, the following traffic management arrangements are required. Please note that these are approximate dates and may be subject to change.

Full Road Closure on Lasswade Road (between Lang Loan and Gilmerton Station Road)

Monday 29th June – Monday 20th July 2015

Diversion route in operation in both directions and signed via Lang Loan and A720 City Bypass. A plan showing the diversion route is enclosed.

It will be necessary to close the bus stop in each direction – nearest alternative stops are further north on Lasswade Road, at Gilmerton Dykes Road.

Access to properties will be maintained at all times.

Closure to Southbound Traffic Only on Lasswade Road (between Lang Loan and Gilmerton Station Road)

Monday 20th July – Friday 7th August 2015

Diversion route for southbound traffic in operation and signed via Lang Loan and A720 City Bypass. A plan showing the diversion route is enclosed.

A temporary northbound bus stop will be provided when works take place close to the current stop position. No southbound bus services will operate on this section of Lasswade Road – the nearest alternative stop is further north on Lasswade Road, at Gilmerton Dykes Road.

"""

14 November 2014

Dear Sir/Madam

LOANHEAD TO GILMERTON CYCLE SCHEME – PHASE TWO

The City of Edinburgh Council, in partnership with Sustrans, is developing a scheme to enhance cycling and walking provision between Edinburgh and Midlothian. This scheme supports walking and cycling policies detailed in the Council’s current Local Transport Strategy and Active Travel Action Plan.

Earlier this year, a new 900 metre cycleway along the former railway line between Lasswade Road and Midlothian was completed, and this opened to the public in August 2014. This forms part of the Council’s Family Network Cycle Route 61.
In order to improve and extend this route further, the following works are now proposed:

• resurfacing and widening of the footway on the east side of Lasswade Road between Gilmerton Station Road and Gilmerton Dykes Road to create a three metre wide shared use cycleway;

• lighting of the route between Lang Loan and Midlothian, including Lasswade Road and the cycle path along the former railway line between Lasswade Road and Loanhead;

• working with Midlothian Council to sign the full route between Roslin and Holyrood Park, where the route connects with the National Cycle Network Route 1; and

• a reduction of the speed limit to 40mph on Lasswade Road south of the Lang Loan roundabout.
The proposed improvements are shown on the accompanying plan.

It is currently anticipated that work on this scheme will commence on site in early February 2015, and will last for a maximum of eight weeks.

In order to enable the works to be carried out, it will be necessary to temporarily close Lasswade Road for periods, during off-peak hours and at weekends. During these closures, a temporary diversion will be in place. However, we will seek to minimise this disruption wherever possible, and will ensure access to adjacent properties is maintained at all times.

For safety reasons, access to the cycle path along the former railway line to Midlothian is likely to be restricted while lighting works are being carried out, and we will also seek to minimise this disruption.

Further information on construction dates and traffic management arrangements will be provided in January 2014. However, should you require any further information in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours faithfully
Callum Smith

@cb "Not on OSM. Assume you have to cycle over the grass?"

There's a path that links both streets but cuts through the kids' playground, which was empty when we went through it last night. If there are kids in it, you could walk the bikes through or cut over the short bit of grass.

I did this route yesterday. Old railway path from Roslin to Lasswade Road, up the path on Lasswade Road - avoiding broken glass - to Gilmerton Dykes Road. From the Roundabout near the end of the road, turn right into Ravenscroft Street and at the end (Drum Street) take a right, then immediate left into East Farm of Gilmerton. At the end of this road, there's a cut through to Drum Crescent, (through the park), and follow Drum Crescent through to Ferniehill Drive, near the Old Dalkeith Road, straight onto the bus lane.

A quiet, mostly traffic-free route all the way, avoiding some very cycling-unfriendly roads and junctions.

"Daft question, but is it finished?"

When is a piece of CEC infrastructure 'finished'?

As far as I am aware, the railway path bit is, BUT there is a plan to install lights which 'may restrict access during installation'.

ALSO there is planned to be pavement widening on Lasswade Road to make it shared use.

" the creation of a new cycle path along the disused railway line between Lasswade Road and the tunnel beneath the City Bypass.
...
· the refurbishment of the existing bridge over Lasswade Road...."
Good news! I made the mistake of taking that route on the road bike instead of the road, not realising that it suddenly becomes just a rough path covered in railway ballast. I then missed any turn-off and ended up anxiously walking over what is left of that bridge and continuing MTB-style riding until I found a way back onto Gilmerton Station Road. Thank goodness for my bike handling skills.

It's another example of path surface changes not being warned about on signage.

"

Sir/Madam,

The City of Edinburgh Council, in partnership with Sustrans, is developing a scheme to enhance cycling and walking provision between Edinburgh and Midlothian. This scheme supports walking and cycling policies detailed in the Council’s Local Transport Strategy and Active Travel Action Plan.

This scheme includes:

· the creation of a new cycle path along the disused railway line between Lasswade Road and the tunnel beneath the City Bypass. This will connect to an existing cycle path in Midlothian which offers off-road access to Loanhead and Roslin.
· the refurbishment of the existing bridge over Lasswade Road to enable pedestrian and cycle access, and construction of a ramp to provide a link between the raised embankment and Lasswade Road.
· on-road improvements between Gilmerton Dykes Road and Moredun Dykes Road, including an upgrade of the existing pedestrian crossing on Gilmerton Dykes Street, so that it can be used by both pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed improvements are shown on the accompanying plan.

It is currently anticipated that work on this scheme will commence on site on Monday 28th April 2014, and will last for approximately eight weeks. For safety reasons, access to the path is likely to be restricted while the work is carried out, however we will seek to minimise this disruption where possible.

To facilitate the works, the following is required:

Lasswade Road, between Gilmerton Station Road and City Bypass
Weekend road closures between Saturday 3rd May 2014 and Sunday 22nd June 2014

During the road closure, a temporary diversion route will be in place via Gilmerton Station Road, Gilmerton Road and Melville Dykes Road. A plan of this diversion route is attached.

The Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience which may arise during the works, and we will seek to minimise any disruption where possible.

Designs are currently being developed for a shared use foot/cycleway on Lasswade Road between Gilmerton Station Road and Gilmerton Dykes Road, and it is expected that this will be delivered later this year.

"Anyone noticed any work on the Lasswade Road to Straiton Pond route?"

I've cycled it a few times recently. The path is good from Roslin to the bridge under the bypass and also good from that bridge to Straiton, past the pond. The section from the bypass to the bridge at Lasswade Road is still a bit rough: no sleepers but arm-jarring hardcore that probably only appeals to mtb'ers.

There's lots of activity at the Millerhill end but I suspect it's all Borders Railway related. I did notice the new road from the Cockatoo to Shawfair had a couple if cycle paths leading off it but they don't seem to go very far yet.

Anyone noticed any work on the Lasswade Road to Straiton Pond route?

Thought there had been a plan for doing in current financial year.

Took another look today (had been told tarmac should by finished 'by Saturday'.

Seems not -

Only about 1/3 done, all rideable though.

Managed the the rough (CEC) bit from Lasswade Road on 17" slicks without incident.

"Normally the road is lowered instead"

Normally councils remove bridges altogether!

I'm always surprised that the bridge is still in place at Newcraighall - if only there was a proper path to Musselburgh Station...

It's fairly easy to get up from Lasswade Road. I suspect this will be well used when the Straiton Pond - Loanhead section is finished.

I'm glad I explored all of this a couple of years ago when the rails were in place all the way to Edgefield.

There will need to be some substantial landscaping of the trackbed because as you can from chdot's pics, the bridge over Lasswade Road was raised about 18 inches some years back for greater road vehicle clearance. Normally the road is lowered instead, so I suppose the railway wasn't that high a priority to stay as a railway.

Straiton Pond is a lovely little secluded area that I hope stays populated with trees and ducks while the machinery roars all around it.

From Sustrans -

"

Our property owning company, RPL Ltd are lifting the tracks through to the end of our land. Which ends just at the Cockatoo.

In terms of construction, Midlothian will build from Loanhead to Straiton Ponds (boundary with CEC) this financial year.

We then hope to work with CEC to get a route from there to at least Lasswade Road next year. This would create a good link out of the City.

"
I particuarly liked the 'do not enter private' and 'danger of death' signs you found.
"

I like signs

"
Given what appeared on your photos, and that you were not on a MTB, I take it there was a fair bit of getting off and walking !
"

Nope.

Two low fences and a short section of steep banking, the rest is fine.

East of Lasswade Road bridge hasn't been bulldozed yet, and I wasn't sure how far I'd get before I found sleepers/rails.

Another day...

As discussed here and confirmed here there is due to be a path, on the old railway line from Straiton Pond to Loanhead with a "bitmac" surface in a couple of weeks.

As a consequence there is an outline plan for a CCE visit, so I thought I'd take a look today - it's a few years since I went to any part of this as it wasn't exactly 'fun' - too many sleepers and whin bushes.

I tracked the trip from Burdiehouse using EveryTrail but the route didn't upload - just the geo-tagged photos.

http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=988551

Getting to the rail line from Edinburgh is 'interesting' (other routes are available). I found not only the path as expected

but also that the next section to Lasswade Road has also been cleared of rails and sleepers and is rideable. The next bit looks like it is being cleared too but isn't nearly as smooth

so I came back via Lasswade Road and Lang Loan.

This would appear to be where Midlothian meets Edinburgh.
