PS actually Naidoo probably a good example of what Kim describes above. maybe better if we don't go down this line of conversation :)

Don't get me started on Greenpeace. Interestingly, their new director (Kumi Naidoo) was also a student with my phd supervisor and our paths crossed occasionally; have contemplated emailing him. I think there is some hope that under his direction they may take more sensible lines - i.e. thinking of the human cost of their campaigns.

There is a problem with so called "environmentalists". When the cold war ended there were many people on the Left who lost the main stay of their political ideology so they look around for away of carrying on the fight against the running dog Capitalism on the Right.

Many of these people turned to the "environmental movement" as the new battle field, hijacking organised campaign groups such Greenpeace. Inconvenient things like collecting scientific evidence were then dumped or twisted to suit the message the campaign, irrespective of where it was good for the "environment".

In recent years, having undermined the term "environmental" they have started using the term "ecological". This is very annoying to those to those who have spent years of hard thinking and study to understand the science of ecology.

End of rant.

Re: Inventor in cleaner engine claim

I read that story this morning and was suitably impressed. I read how the technology used is called homogenous charge compression injection, so I looked that up on Wikipedia and now I'm not very impressed anymore.
I.e. doesn't sound like this guy has done anything new. Perhaps he has overcome some of the disadvantages of this type of engine, hard to tell from the beeb story.

Quite

That's one of the problems with believing 'there's a technical solution for that'.

- what question is it the answer to...?

"Inventor in cleaner engine claim

The engine could be fitted in cars as early as 2013, the inventor says
A Dundee inventor has designed an engine which he says would make cars cleaner, more efficient - and possibly cheaper to make."

Radio 4 8.30

"'Ethical man' Justin Rowlatt asks if it is time the green movement ditched some of its ideological excess baggage. Although apparently united in their goal to tackle climate change, some environmentalists attach other dogmas to the cause - from a preference for the natural over the hi-tech to a hatred of consumption, capitalism and urbanisation. Could these extraneous aspects of green politics be undermining the environmental cause?"
