When I followed Bike Route 5 across NY state, most of the time it was out in the sticks and therefore reasonably quiet. Cities like Syracuse are more akin to London-meets-Glasgow, but with very few cyclists to be seen. Albany was a little better in that respect, but you still had to be on top of your bike handling skills.</p> <p>But my biggest fear while riding over there was...the police.
