Meh, I don't think I have ever had a problem walking along the canal after dark, the sheer amount of light bouncing off the clouds gives plenty to see by

I'm just a cynic, but can't we fix the stuff that's broken first, before installing inflatable churches* on the towpath?

With canal-side lighting in place, there would be less need for incredibly bright bike lights and folk might then complain less about being "blinded" by cyclists.

Given that almost everyone who cycles along the towpath in the dark uses lights, Catseyes would seem to be the most useful addition.

Most (?) people who walk will either carry a torch or have dark-adjusted retinas after a few minutes anyway (unless in the vicinity of Dorset Place, or the floodlights at the back of Analysys Mason on Craiglockhart Ave).

Lots of LED lights might well confuse wildlife, especially the moon-following. RJ could maybe chime in here too.

I presume they have considered the effect on wildlife? While I can see benefits to this, I thought there was a move to try and reduce the amount of light produced by cities at nightime?

Quote from Spokesworker - hope it would be more effective than the solar lights by Queen Margaret Uni

"As promised by Edinburgh Council, LED solar lighting is to be
installed experimentally on a section of the canal towpath – could
this be a first for the UK?? The invitation to tender has just been
announced, “The City of Edinburgh Council wishes to appoint a
suitably experienced contractor to supply and install Solar LED
lighting along the Union Canal Towpath, within Edinburgh.”
