Your guess was right; you're meant to put your downtube between the two loops.

As allebong alluded, I think sustained and heavy substance abuse played a central part in the design and/or commissioning processes.

@Uberuce. I'm still not entirely sure - what is the 'correct answer'.

@custard. Yes it's an EBC tagalong with a quick release: I think a security skewer might well work there. Good idea!

Each time I visit I keep a mental tally of the number of people that use the downtubebenders as intended, and so far it's roughly once every three times. That's not once every three bikes, mind. That's once out of all the bikes parked there over three visits.

Because of this low frequency I didn't figure out how they were meant to be used until my third trip after installation, which is when I saw how it's meant to be done.

Normally I take the hump when I fail to figure out a mechanical/geometrical puzzle like this, but in this case I actually felt proud that my brain had point blank refused to consider the 'correct' answer because it's so bloody stupid.

Who would look at the infamous wheelbender and think: you know what? Wheels are too replaceable and repairable, we can do betters so let's make something that'll utterly horse the frame!

There is still one Sheffield rack there, but it's not in direct sight of the security bods that usually stand by the front door and it's falling to bits.

So I lock up to the commendably stout railings instead.

Not that anyone asked, but I read on the Merchiston Community Council site that there's a Farmers Market at FP on the 1st Sunday from 11am to 4pm in the main mall.

You didn't know that? You do now.

The Sheffield racks have been gone for at least a year - don't know the exact date they got replaced with the current abominations though. I'm at FP quite often on the bike and they drive (or should that be cycle) me up the wall.

I've kept meaning to write/email to the management there and politely ask just what they were smoking when they decided to get rid of the excellent old racks. I can't think of any rational explanations.

Are all the Sheffield racks gone? Very disappointing.

I'd assume no one would steal a trailer-bike. We used to leave ours lots of places, with no problems.

is the hitch a quick release?
could you replace it with a type of security bolt?
Theres kryptonite modular locks on the on one store for £9.99 (plus delivery if under £20)
maybe something to look at?
not great locks, but maybe fitting for the trailer

P.S. Any tips for securing a trailer bike (used to bring the other half of cinema party)? If you can decipher the blurry picture off my phone's camera* you'll see I put a U-lock through the trailer bike's wheel. This wouldn't have stopped someone unhitching it and carrying it off. I hoped they couldn't be bothered...

*It's got a rubbish camera, but the phone's battery lasts for two weeks+ between charges.

Went to the cinema a couple of days ago (Despicable Me 2, since you ask. Only cycles featured were a child's trike. Some funny bits).

Anyhow, the Sheffield stands that I remember have been replaced with something truly bizarre. I think you're meant to squidge your bike in between the two bars, but my mudguard didn't fit and my bottom bracket got caught. The alternative is that they are the worst wheelbenders I've ever seen. Any thoughts?

Had never previously noticed how many bike racks there are at Fountain Park, at least four sets of 10 or so sheffield racks (maybe more). But tonight bizarrely, one was completely full of black mountain bikes - was there a convention or something? - while all the others mostly empty (as is more usual there - we're almost always the only bikes at our 'usual' rack.
