This chart <a href="http://www.inflationdata.com/inflation/images/charts/Oil/Gasoline_inflation_chart.htm">(US Gas Prices)</a> shows inflation adjusted "gas" prices are the same now as they were in the 1940s and by no means at historical highs.</p> <p>If you asked a 40s petrolium engineer how long reserves would last, they would have said ~20 years tops, much the same as now. They are assuming there will be any petrol in 2050, I suppose that is conceivable, only forty years away. A lot can happen in that time, and none of this might be an issue then.
