Rhode Gear/ Co-pilot uses blackburn rack. We've been happy with ours - its gotten lots of use every day. may get something smaller for the wee lad until he grows into it though.

Lots of seats probably on sale at the Nearly New sale tomorrow!

@stepdoh - the Hamax range of child seats clip into a dedicated bracket which you can securely attach to the seat tube. It's an alternative to sitting the seat onto the rack, and one I feel is safer though I have nothing to back that up with.

Hamax seat

I carry my son, who's a big lad for a 3.5 year old, no problems in the Hamax seat. Got one for my daughter too on my wife's bike. Both were from Gumtree so keep your eyes peeled :-)

"Have a blackburn rack sitting under my desk, is it just a matter of plonking it on that?"

I hope it is. We got a free seat from Gumtree last week, a wife-colleague has a Blackburn rack going gratis (if we're able to remove it from the bike they're chucking out (which I'll divert to TBS rather than the tip)) and I recently found my old inner tubes to pad the P-clips I'll need to fit a rack to my eyeletless seat stays.

I'm hoping that 23lb+ of child plus the weight of the seat won't be a problem seeing as my bike wasn't sold with a recommended maximum user weight and so is presumably safe for people considerably heavier than me, or me-plus-one-stone-rucksack...

ooh, interesting, with tot number two on the way I'm looking to take over El Ro's current nursery run to Arboretum Ave some of the time.

Think bikeseat rather than trailer, don't know if the little monkey would stay in it! Have a blackburn rack sitting under my desk, is it just a matter of plonking it on that?

not a problem. the spokes/bike station leaflet is full of advice, but am also happy to discuss pros and cons from our experience (we have the full range of kit).

as you'll see from my previous posts I have really liked the trailer, but I don't use it on the daily commute - more weekend trips, shopping etc.

but now that I'm using it with 4 month old baby, i wish i'd gotten one that converts into a buggy -- eg when we got to the botanics a few weekends ago, would have been nice to leave baby in it and push around, instead of transferring to sling. am seriously thinking of trading our double trailer in for a single one that converts (anyone have one they want rid of?).

Hi there! It's my sister who is keen to borrow the trailer - thanks so much, SRD. I think she'll give the Bike station a go, thanks for that info - and if not, she might offer a bottle of wine in exchange for the load of yours!
Thanks again.

although the bike station should be able to do this too -- looks like Friday afternoons (handy if you're off work, I guess)

TRAINING AND SUPPORT FOR PARENTS - 'WEANS ON WHEELS'

This exciting new 2011 Spokes / Bike Station project aims to encourage
family cycle-commuting for every-day journeys to work/nursery/school,
through providing support in using child-carrying cycling equipment.
This is targeted at parents with children too young to go on their own
bike. For more info, and our factsheet on bike-commuting with kids,
see
http://www.spokes.org.uk/wordpress/2011/01/bike-commuting-with-kids/

As their part of the project the Bike Station will offer...
- equipment demonstrations at nurseries, playgroups and schools (child
seats, tag-alongs, trailers etc)
- free hands-on whole-family training sessions with a professional trainer
- [from 15 April] drop-in sessions at the Bike Station to see/try
equipment, every Friday 1-4pm, coinciding with their Children’s Bike
Sales.

Contact the Bike Station to book a family training session, or if your
nursery / playgroup/ school would be interested in hosting a free
equipment demonstration session. Ruairidh, email
