One of my favourite corners is the tight right-hander at the bottom of Gillespie Road, just leading onto the bridge. You can do it at 30mph if it's quiet and the tarmac's dry.

Research Avenue North is another nice corner, especially on a hot summer day. You potter along the secluded cycle/walkway leading off the A71, and sit on one of the huge scenic boulders and absorb the heat while reading a book.

Double chevrons - the slope is steeper than 1 in 5 (20%); single chevron it's between 1 in 5 and 1 in 7 (14%).

There is a new sign on west sign advising cyclists to dismount. The surface of the road down was a bit iffy but going up the other side was fine.

Are OS arrows 1 in 7 or steeper/

Yes, quite a secluded spot and a fairly steep climb out in either direction. The ford is *very* slippy underwheel. I went there when I was trying to find all the roads marked with gradient chevrons on the local OS maps. I gave up on that when I realised that there's no rhyme or reason to their use by the OS. I mean if that warrants a chevron why not the Lady Brae in Gorebridge or some of those cleuchs around Gifford?

On Saturday, I went for a bike-based wander in East Lothian. Trying (and failing) to follow the lanes to Fala, I found a delightful place near Costerton

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?ll=55.859261,-2.906163&spn=0.003968,0.009645&t=h&z=17&lci=com.panoramio.all

Using the little google map, you can follow the road West-East down the hill and over the ford.

It is definitely worth getting lost now and then (eh Kaputnik?).
