No thanks for the guided run through the backstreets cb, think you saved me from the big dip at morningside.

Otherwise a really nice run, wasn't half as bad as I'd set it up to be, and was there buy 9 o'clock! Took the Seafield Moor Road (mainly cos the 702 takes a sharp incline at that point :) ) traffic wasn't too hairy and everyone passed wide so it was all good.

...and no one got hurt by the robot.

Ride back to the station was superfun!

Thanks for all the advice you wonderfully useful bunch!

Hope you made it after the confusing route I took you to Morningside. Although it wasn't that far off what Cyclestreets says.

I have a friend who until recently was bike commuting out to work there and all I really remember was that she far preferred the Seafield Moor Road (for what it's worth). I only know this because I didn't know where it went, and expressed an interest.

I've ridde the A702 a couple of times on the lowracer, but not sure I'd enjoy it on an ordinary bike without the bubble.

Ahh, i hadn't scrolled down and looked at the elevation profile... heh.

Compared to normal run:

Will give it a go anyway, is a good leg workout and will be an easy run back to waverley for my train to a meeting in Glasgow.

How's that for sustainable businessing.

Everyone at PY please remind me to shove off at a reasonable hour. :)

Thanks for the input folks, will plan route accordingly, although may go via MMW so I can grab a flat white and cinnamon bun. Don't have to be there till 10, so will have ample time.

I used to commute to Bush, when living in Morningside and later in Newington, so have used something akin to both the "Balanced route" (I didn't use Kirk Brae, just went straight up Liberton Brae, also I didn't turn off at Straition, just followed the A701) and the Fastest route. Personally I prefer the "Balanced route", but going up Liberton Brae and following the A701. Oh and I don't understand why it has a strange loop at the end, just take the road straight ahead at the Bush Road cross roads.

If I was using the fast route, I wouldn't bother with Seafield Moor Road, it looks a better option on the map, but on the ground it is narrower and has a lot of heavy lorries going to the tip.

that there was some reason not to

I avoid the A702 even on my road bike. It's just too fast a road, driven as though it's an extension of the bypass at one end and M74 at t'uther.

I've cycled a few times to the Bush estate and beyond, and generally just took the direct route out of town - Morningside to Fairmilehead to Hillend, and the middle road where it divides into three. Once over Fairmilehead crossroads, most of it is slightly downhill and you can rattle along at 20 or 25.

d'you have the relevant spokes map?

I'm pretty sure I did what k'nik suggests last time we were there, just because it is quieter, but have an idea that there was some reason not to.

The red route looks generally OK - but I would cut off the A702 once you're over the Bypass and go down the Seafield Moor Road to come in from the Bilston direction.

I'd stick to Braid Road rather than Comiston and probably adjust things a bit between Holyrood Park Road and through Newington/Grange but the red is otherwise OK.

Hilly!!!! Could not make it up Comiston Rd towing trailer last year. Just about okay otherwise until I snapped a gear cable nr your destination.

Traffic can get quite backed up through Morningside, (I prefer to go around and join Comiston Rd via Balcarres st)

(oops. now see that red route avoids M'side rd. good idea!)

I've got a photoshoot at the SAC bush estate buildings tomorrow morning, is about the same distance as my usual commute from Leith to Ingliston, just wondering how hostile the route is once you get past the coffee stop at Peter's Yard?

Any suggestions as to which way to go? Think I'd be aiming for the Red Route as suggested by cyclestreets
