The "road to nowhere" after Winchburgh (coming from Kirkliston direction) actually goes somewhere. It's just not somewhere that's there anymore;

This is all that remains of the hamlet of Auldcathie.

My Dad tells me that the landscaped bing accessible from this road is where the remains of the VAT 69 blending / bottling plant at South Queensferry were carted off to when it was demolished.

Sharp eyed watchers may have noticed various photos from yesterday in other posts.

This one shows an amazing bit of fairly new infrastructure we came across. (NOT in Edinburgh...)

Not in proposal mentioned previously either -

http://www.westlothian.gov.uk/media/downloaddoc/1799514/1841742/1896959/dcpp_mapc

This map seems to show zig-zag ramp (behind Abercorn Church)

http://www.hopetoun.co.uk/files/documents/Hopetoun_Area_Map_Thatched_Cottage.pdf

"
Cycling

There are many routes suitable for cycling throughout the wider Estate including National Cycle Route 76 and the Union Canal towpath. Although we encourage and welcome visitors to arrive by bicycle, for conservation reasons and in consideration of others enjoying the walks in the core of the parkland around the house, cycling is not allowed within the grounds of Hopetoun.
"

Ruggtomcat - a kind of mixed route - tarmac/cycle path/path that your old tricross should cope with [maybe you sold it when you went recumbent?].

I am aiming at whole family cycle of a more modest distance this a.m. We are all somewhat burnt by Pentlands Easter Egg rolling yesterday, so shade of the WoL path is looking good.

There was a CTC ride on some of tomorrow's likely route today -

"
We went to Blackness on the new path via Abercorn church, for the most part wonderful if not a bit new...but there were about three areas where the rain has washed away the path cutting a pretty deep culvert right across.
"

This has put me off my previous plan -

"
Also the coastal path from Blackness to Bo'ness has taken a real hammering in places, with the sea wall having been washed away and huge boulders to negotiate

"I ended up pushing / carrying the bike most of the way,"

I don't remembering it being that bad - progress was slow though. It was a few years ago and is so close to the water that it must be susceptible to flood damage.

"which was a shame as it would make a delightful shorefront cycle."

The first time I did round the forth on my horrid old hybrid bike, I went right down to Blackness and then along the shore. I ended up pushing / carrying the bike most of the way, which was a shame as it would make a delightful shorefront cycle.

"(Edit: you need Microsoft Silverlight for that OS map website by the way, but it really is worth it)"

I seem to have installed it last year - but don't think I've used it before! Nice maps!

"
Some pictures of that bit of path, here:

"

Yes, doesn't show the rockier bits!

Anyone been through Wester Shore Wood between Abercorn and Blackness?

"More recently did Blackness to Bo'ness along the coast - which CycleStreets doesn't seem to know about. Perhaps because it's 'a bit rough'.

Not even on OSM!"

OS mapping here (top website, by the way)...
http://uslot.com/NewBingTestPage.html
...shows route 76 going halfway between the two then stopping?!

Some pictures of that bit of path, here:

I have.

Many years ago.

More recently did Blackness to Bo'ness along the coast - which CycleStreets doesn't seem to know about. Perhaps because it's 'a bit rough'.

Interesting wind direction for heading to Falko's in Gullane for bun (very dear). A fair distance from Balerno but too close for you Southsiders? I have never been to Blackness Castle - do-able on Cycle Track from Queensferry - was out that way once and locals having BBQ right in middle of cycle track - nice.
