“

There is growing demand from amateur cyclists for more affordable, carbon fibre bike frames.
The material is light and strong, and among other things enthusiasts hope it will improve their speed.

In Portugal, Carbon Team and its investors are betting on this appetite for high-end bikes growing in Europe.

Located in Campia (not far from Oliveira de Frades, a town famous for bikes), a group of investors from Portugal, Germany, and Taiwan launched the firm in 2018.

The company believe manufacturing of hi-tech bicycle components is poised to return to Europe, after decades of supply from firms in China and Taiwan.

Emre Ozgunes joined Carbon Team in 2019, hired as a general manager for the new company after years of experience in the Portuguese bike sector.

Originally from Turkey, he worked as a factory floor employee in a bicycle company in central Portugal, where he learned the trade.

Not sure if much has changed in 10 years for ‘made in Scotland/UK’.

(Brompton still expanding - which is remarkable for a ‘one product’ business!)

Meanwhile in the world -

“

This has been fuelled in particular by Campagnolo’s rapid expansion of OEM partnerships. OEM partnership sales in financial year 2022 are projected to represent 45% of the company’s turnover, a five-fold increase in absolute terms since financial year 2019.

Much of this can be attributed to Campagnolo’s supply chain success – while competitors outsourcing manufacturing to East-Asia have struggled to maintain production, the company has expanded its output and increased market share. Campagnolo has chosen to base its manufacturing centre at home in Vicenza, Italy, alongside an EU production hub in Romania, which has minimised supply chain disruption as designing, developing and producing products almost entirely in house and close to home has ensured the brand is not reliant on third-party manufacturers to produce its products.

Campagnolo is expanding significantly to capitalise on its recent growth. Staffing levels have increased by 30% over the past two years while factory capacity has been boosted by 75% to meet demand.

“

https://www.bikebiz.com/campagnolo-unveils-new-dream-bigger-brand-positioning-amid-record-growth/amp/

Interestingly (possibly) the Paper Bicycle takes a lot from my experience with both recumbents and folding bicycles.

Its kind of a folding bicycle without the hinges, specifically the long seatmast and one size fits all side of things. And its low centre of gravity, comfort, nimble handling and pedalling stiffness feeds from my experiences hooning around with my bum inches from the ground.

I am also a closet rider of old Moultons, and I see this as a simplification of the very original Moulton concept of a universal bike.

CC Is there anywhere in Edinburgh where people can try out a Paper Bicycle?

NEWS: Laid Back Bikes will become a dealer for Edinburgh as I think the Paper Bicycle is a great design with lots of options. I don't really sell any solo uprights so it's good to have one that can fill lots of niches. I'm also big fan of hub brakes as they are used on ICE trikes. Hub gears already seem popular on Helios but having hub lighting with internal cabling makes for a very usable bike.

Demo bike should arrive soon although I'm sure Bike Station would be happy for people to have a look at theirs.

@cc The Bike Station had some demonstration models last year at their stand at the Leith Gala Day, I had a ride on one. I think it was part of an initiative to promote cycling in general, which was a bit confusing because I associate them with recycled bikes. I assume they still have the Paper bicycles, even if they are not selling them, unless they've given them to someone or an organisation. A pity the person you spoke to does not know about this!

@Benkinetics likewise - I try at least once a week at least to photograph something interesting and forgotten about Edinburgh's industrial past. Tonight I found a United Fireclay Products brick in remains of Woodhall Mill in Juniper Green. That's a new one for the collection!

kaputnik, that's fascinating - I had no idea that's there. When I'm not messing about with bikes, I photograph derelict buildings...

PS Hi Nick ;-)
