It is a committee decision - don't know why.

Chicanes have now appeared at the bottom of the path. They don't look very well placed.

Great desire line cutting out the new sweeping corner - surely that could have been predicted. Why not build a shortcut path for pedestrians?

"Cyclists must dismount" sign at the top of the 'steep' bit. Not sure if I've seen the word "must" used before.

Still needs a bit of work at the bottom - current access is via an undropped kerb with a tarmac-splodge pseudoramp, though there's a still-fenced-off bit which might be the proper access.
Not quite wide enough for a pedestrian to pass to the side of one normal cyclist sticking to the left and one dozy dingbat veering about not less than a metre to their right unless he starts looking where he's going and moves over a bit. Room for one cyclist to overtake two others through the middle, providing he wakes up again, straightens up and moves over.
Still erratically steep/shallow, though can now be ascended seated, with a laden pannier, at 40T*26T*700C. Also no need to swerve into and out of the gutters whilst avoiding being trapped by the little wooden fence things.

New path came on line this week. Nice new asphalt (no steps as far as I can see) but the margins are recently-turned mud, will take a bit of landscaping. Perfectly usable though. Not quite the same festival of hairpin bends that the Russel Road - Roseburn path link is...

Work is now happening and it seems that the path is just being moved a bit at the bottom part to make it less steep. It is not clear what anti-cycling measures are going to be put in yet. I await further progress with baited badgers.

I tried that path once with a buggy and quickly resorted to carrying it down each set of steps. You could sort of use the wheel-gutter going upwards (with a lockable central front wheel) but that required as much hoickiness as lifting. Not really an option for people who don't like hoicking buggies.

Suggested diversion is actually quite sensible.

via Craigmillar Castle Avenue, Greendykes Road and Little France Drive.

and doesn't involve the deeply horrifying Craigmillar Castle Road.

Fine for cyclists. Helluva walk but probably still easier than struggling up and down the steps if you have a pushchair.

Little France Campus Developments
Closure of Hospitals North footpath on 9/2/15 for 4 weeks

You will be aware of a number of enabling works taking place on the site. These works are taking place in order to prepare the site for the new Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Department of Clinical Neurosciences, which will be built on the site of car park B later this year.

Part of the works these works provides for an upgrade of the existing footpath to the north of the site to provide a combined cycle and footpath.

Unfortunately to do this works the contractor requires to close the whole route on the RIE site (see the attached plan).

The contractor plans to start this work on the 9/2/15 and the works are expected to take 4 weeks.

We thank you for your patience and ongoing support during these works as we look to enhance the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and prepare the site for the new RHSC + DCN.
