Anything from Artie Shaw through ACDC to Wagners Tristram & Isolde (and beyond!)
For spoken word it has to be Radio 4 (a habit I picked up when driving for a living, commercial pop radio is insufferable)

At work I normally have the radio permanently set to Planet Rock so I can annoy all and sundry by identifying 90% of songs from the first chord :)

On the way to work: Radio 4 unless Andrew marr's on in which case its downloaded episodes of Radio4 goodies like 'Down the Line', 'Count Arthur Strong's Radio Show','Ed Reardon's Week' & 'At home with the snails'. Get these and more from http://radioarchive.cc

I heart Roxy Music rather a lot, the playing for thier lives content was spot on. In every dream home a heartache is a personal favourite because it contains one of the most grubby unpleasant lyrics in history:

'Inflatable doll, lover ungreatful. I blew up your body... but you blew my mind.'

There's a memorable performance on Musik Laden (or it may actually be whistle test) here:

Plaistow Patricia...went to see ABFCAP at the Fringe a couple of years ago (ABFCAP? initials of the first line of Plaistow Patricia) and was transported back to the late 70's. Brilliant insight to the Dury character and story. Altogether now: From the Mile End Road to the Matchstick Beacontree....

Thunderbird wine, I do believe its still available ! As is concord ! But ive never seen Neat and Tidy on channel 4 ever since ! Ahhhh, Friday evenings !

Ah yes, Mr Dury, how could I forget? In the late 70's, at an age when I was desperately bigging up my musical credibility with my peers by saying daft things like 'Of course, I never go to see a band more than once...' suffice to say I went to see ID&TBs a half-dozen times. An exceptional live band, and their star hasn't dimmed (in my head at least): after decades of searching I finally got hold of a reasonably-priced copy of Lord Upminster last year. In an HMV shop. In Tokyo...

Which is of course from the album Pointy Boots...

Ah yes, that'll be 'New Boots and Pointies'. Thunderbird = 'Californian Pear Wine'. To be avoided.

Phil Spector's "A Christmas Present to You"

That's the only christmas album I'll allow in the house, apart from The Beach Boys one, funnily enough. I like the track where Mr Spector chats over Silent Night. Such soothing tones.

@ Laidback - agree re Roxy - I also got the 1st Bryan Ferry solo album, These Foolish Things, (I've got all these on vinyl too, but nice to put on ipod) from Fopp at the same time - another favourite lp.

Today at work I listened to Phil Spector's "A Christmas Present to You". It's basically like regular Phil Spector but with sleighbells instead of castinets. So it's very good.

Early Roxy - on first album they played as if their lives depended on it...(they could have been lynched for their outfits). Bryan Ferry is on Radio 360 somewhere in another context.

Ian Dury - yes - a vinyl copy will spoil all digital imitations.

Silver Thunderbird - see Marc Cohn.

My daughter borrowed a Beach Boys album and thought it was cool. I keep telling her she should listen to King Creosote and the Fence Collective. Meanwhile in Anstruther

I have been mainly listening to the fantastic first 3 Roxy Music albums for the last couple of weeks (currently £3 each in Fopp! Bargain of the year!).

Also a fair bit of early* My Bloody Valentine of late, while boringly recalling those hazy days of sunshine, pointy boots and thunderbird wine from my youth.

Saloon and The Beach Boys also get played round here too on occasion (btw it doesn't need to be summer to listen to the Beach Boys, you know!) - my fave modern take on the Beach Boys at the moment is prob Animal Collective/Panda Bear.

I would never listen to music while on my bike. Not for safety reasons though - it's just that that's the only time I ever get any peace.

*Thought I'd insert the word 'early' here, in an attempt to sound really cool.

PS. @ Recombodna, what band(s) are you in??? *intrigued face*

For my inherited iPod shuffle the Radio 360 Radio 360 Podcast episode 68 (Sigur Ros etc) episode 62 (Reggae mix). Lot of other stuff I've never heard of but all with great sound quality by DJ Darkhorse. He laments that the days of paid DJ'ing are over thanks to Mac and web. Everything is a commodity these days...

On the hi-fi recently an old CD of Shadows and Light by Joni Mitchell with Jaco Pastorius on bass and Pat Metheny on guitar.

For end of evening 'Still' by John Abercrombie with more great guitar and bass.

Maybe Tony McManus as well - Ceol More is good one and not just for Celtic music fans.

Marc Cohn album if I want to remind myself what a well performed and recorded CD sounds like. Quite poppy but with a deep sound.

Not Mumford and Sons - too much banjo and teenage angst!

or the petrol-head equivalent:

I had a little motor-car
It wouldn't take me very far
I couldn't make the wheels go round
It wouldn't move along the ground.

So I lifted up the bonnet
Poured a pail of water on it
Then I tied it up with string
And off it went like anything.

Two children under six, so the following is a list of titles, not made-up band names...

Wind the Bobbin Up

The Wheels on the Bus

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

If You're Happy and You Know It

Three Craws Sat Upon a Wall

...and the Beach Boys in the car, because it's summer.

High five, I love the TRON: Legacy soundtrack! Easily the best thing about that film :)

Also at the moment I have been listening to a lot of Yelle (bouncy French pop) and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' It's Blitz! And a lot of Talking Heads, for those of us who enjoy music from the 1970s-80s, too!
In fact, if for some reason you really want the down-low on my listening (on my laptop, so not at work or on the move) habits, voici:

Everything Everything at the mo. I just like how the chap changes octave randomly while singing.

Radio 1 on way in Radio 4 on way out. Absolute 90s rather more than i'd like to admit. Radio 4 Extra rather a lot.

"One of these days i'm going to listen to something from this century."

It's not that I don't hear any 21C music - just not longer (mentally) record the intro and year of release like I used to!

Apparently 'my sort of music' is probably on Radio 2 these days (never listened).

Just like the passing of Douglas Adams (other thread), the death of John Peel left a hole where new music used to be discovered.

Radio Scotland has a variety of music programmes in the evening to suit many tastes.
