So long as trees are planted next year or the year after, should this be too much of an issue? If they were saying "we're no longer going to plant any trees", that would be different. But they aren't. The article points out that trees can easily live upwards of 75 years. If they are 72 years or 78 years old, there ain't that much difference, one septugenarian tree is I'm sure very much like another.

Planting trees is nice, but if the council can't (or won't) then yes, why shouldn't concerned and outraged citizens have a whip round and organise funds for some trees to be planted if it's that much of an issue.

Maybe if everyone caught barbequeing off-piste was charged a couple of quid for a temporary BBQ licence then sufficient funds would be available to plant lots of lovely trees.

Will they blow the entire budget on daily bin collections?

A lot of these 'Public' amenities started off with private funds (like the Royal Infirmary for instance). I think too many people expect the Council to do Everything these days. When you look at what we get for our council tax, it does go a long way.

I was told of a program presented by Evan Davies (I think) who takes away everything from a single street (except Plice, NHS, Fire and Education, in London and give them their council tax, to decide to pay for everything from their own small budget. I'm sure it will make interesting TV.

NO trees are to be planted on the Meadows this year to replace more than 30 that have been lost in recent months.
