Bute Ferry from Wemyss Bay cancelled on MOnday due to wind

Would take only a few hours to go from Glasgow to Loch Lomond on a bike via Bowling and Old Kilpatrick buy a 99 from the van in the country park at teh waers edge then go home. Sounds good. Certain sections out Drumchapel way a little ropey.

@chdot ScotRail doesn't (officially) take tandems.

I'm guessing that if you removed the front wheel, a tandem would fit in a standard cycle bay, thus there'd be no problem for the guard to deal with...

@chdot Could even take a tandem on East Coast to Stirling).

Or just hop on the ScotRail service to Dunblane? Then pootle a few miles on quietish B or unclassified roads...

There's this -

http://www.dounetherabbithole.co.uk (some stuff for kids).

Easy to reach from Edinburgh http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/751972

Could even take a tandem on East Coast to Stirling).

"or some of the island connections that have been mentioned here before."

Well I mentioned Bute.

http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=1627

Two trains and a ferry from Edinburgh.

Lots of places to explore and things to look at.

Some of it has certainly 'seen better days', but there's a lot of effort being made to go back/forward.

http://www.heraldscotland.com/mobile/news/home-news/rothesay-regeneration-project-wins-1-5m-lottery-grant-1.1101788

In cycling terms there wasn't much traffic and went at reasonable speeds.

Was on the Black Isle (not an island) earlier this year where speed and attitude of drivers made it less pleasant to cycle.

Hard to think of any long distance offroad routes, although depending on the definition of 'long' you can certainly put quite ample days in on various forestry roads in Scotland!

Article and comments/suggestions on the Guardian here

These sound good to me. But wish there were some suggestions for closer to home. maybe next year we'll try Glasgow - loch Lomond and/or some of the island connections that have been mentioned here before.
