I sampled the Glasgow version as the events clashed in my diary. The purvey was less impressive but the location was a bit better for capturing those scurrying about on 2 (and 3) wheels. The arrangement is to set up on the North side of the Squiggly Bridge and the steady flow of commuting cyclists were captured roughly 50% as they crossed the Clyde or came along NCN 75 on the Broomielaw.

I'd commend the Operation Dring Dring (Velo Quebec) for a future event (September Environment?) where drop-in coffee and rolls are set-up on key street corners. Cyclists can stop for a chat or you simply offer a card asking them to e-mail or post in start/finish postcodes, and some basic journey data (work/daily etc) and offer an opt-in to be contacted for future surveys of regular cyclists. The great detail is that cyclists can just pull in and stop whilst drivers have to sit and be ready to move off when the queue starts to move, and just watch jealously how versatile your commuting can be with a bike.

The Canadian model had the coffee and rolls sponsored by coffee shops/chain in return for their access to distribute special offer vouchers for return visits.

Depending on your affinity for M*D**'s they used to offer free soft drinks for events, in return for offering discount vouchers for the local outlets. Sites might be The Meadows, Nicholson Sq?, Shandwick Place area?

Laidback - that was thebusiest Bike Breakfast ever certainly from 8 until 8.30 - many more stallholders etc. Perhaps it thinned out after I left? I got map 14/20, a puncture repair kit, two water bottles and a vegetarian haggis roll, still coming back in me. THe newspaper they gave out is stuffed inside my shoes.

sorry to have missed the later [non-freebie junky] arrivals

I love that the event serves little purpose other than getting many of the committed commuters of edinburgh together for collection of freebies

It was good to catch up with so many people this morning. Min, Kaputnik, Anth (who ran away with my headset press), Gembo, RJ, Laid Back, SRD, miniSRD, Morningsider, Crowriver and miniCrowriver, a Brompton friend, and Ryan (I think!) from pedals, whose business cards carry the FSC 100% label. I thought the turnout was pretty good myself, if a bit subdued because of the weather.

I decided to wait until the rain was heavy enough before leaving for work. The Mound was nose to tail down to Market Street, and I still think the no-left-turn into Princes St is a huge oversight.

Nice seeing those I could. Another wet bike breakfast - turnout was quietest I've seen. Nice that some people tried out the Paper Bike. Bike Station also had theirs along with their load carrying Bullitt. Yes... I am getting the PB set up as 8 speed! Ideal machine for keeping chain dry in the monsoon season.

Someone actually complained I hadn't brought any recumbents but Arellcat had hers to cover the 'genre'!

Hello to anyone who was there after 9 and I didn't speak to, alas could only make it then due to school run and daughter in tow. Alas, because the catering were all out of rolls: offered bacon in a napkin but declined. Tummy rumbling now, curse of the hungry cyclist (cf. back issues of Yehuda Moon). Good coffee though!

Nice to chat with SRD, easily spotted on the Helios! Tried to catch Laidback but he had customers so just had a wee wander with my daughter. Didn't buy anything, picked up Spokes newsletters and council/Bike Station maps for friends. Also a lovely pink Spokes balloon for my daughter, she was really pleased.

As we left she asked 'Mummy why are all your cycling buddies men'? which is obviously not true as we met two women cyclists we know (and crowriver's daughter), but depressing none the less.
