"There is now a substantial body of things which we know do work. They are summarised in ‘Making a Cycling Town’ – and they range from better facilities and secure parking, to motivating signs and symbols (‘minutes’, not ‘miles’); lots of Advance Stop Lines and cycle symbols on the roads, to professional cycle training, events and activities. Whatever else, cycling needs to be seen as convenient, safe and enjoyable."

http://www.camcycle.org.uk/newsletters/96/article8.html

The whole thing is a bit long but is written by Phillip Darnton who knows more about the subject than most people.

"I now think we need to change the way roads are used. Make them more people friendly and less car friendly."

Yes. Cycle training isn't 'the answer', getting more people cycling is part of the answer.

Some people are more likely to cycle if they have the confidence that good training should give.

Some people are cycling who might have benefitted from training earlier in their lives.

Universal CT at primary school would help, but it's still a long way off.

Most people don't really like the idea of riding on 'busy' roads, what we really need to do is make the roads safer and more people friendly. I used to think that cycle training was the way forward, but I am not so sure. Having looked at a lot of evidence from places where riding a bicycle as transport is normal as riding a bus, I now think we need to change the way roads are used. Make them more people friendly and less car friendly. Start be taking out the parking...

"until I saw chdot's picture"

I took it while waiting at the lights.

She had just come round the corner from York Place.

The lights changed, I went down Broughton Street and she was stuck behind a couple of pedestrians.

I assume she really doesn't ride on 'busy' roads.

Sunday night around 8pm, I was leaving St Martin's on the Gorgie road (leaving Stan Reeves discoursing on if/when Bill and Jenny Brockie had turned into their bicycles...or something like that).

I was pushing buggy and holding 4 year old's hand and feeling quite good about the world (couple of glasses of rose and good fellowship will do that).

Turning off Gorgie road up Henderson terrace, which is quite an acute angle, I found myself face to face (well, buggy to wheel) with a bloke (maybe early/mid20s) on a bike. I just looked at him and said. "You should be on the road". He just looked at me, and went on the road. I said 'thank you' But then crossing the road, he went back on the pavement again. So I yelled something rude (but suitable for small ears) at him.

The whole time we went up Henderson terrace he was just sitting there looking back at us, but not saying anything. a bit creepy. I did wonder if the kids had not been there, I might have got thumped. It was a lovely evening though and I did not let it spoil it. In fact, had almost forgotten about this until I saw chdot's picture!

Unfortunately this offer is in London -

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/roadusers/cycling/11689.aspx

If only Edinburgh's nearest equivalent, Transport Edinburgh Ltd hadn't spent all that time and effort (and money) trying to build a tram line.
