FleaBay madness has got me bad. Picked up this BSA 20 shopper in quite good nick for not much. Not sure whether to just keep it as a runaround and guest bike or 'hop it up' Sheldon Brown style?

N+1 strikes again!

N+1 strikes again!

Latest addition to the collection: a 1990s Raleigh Pioneer Trail. An early hybrid. 700c wheels, Reynolds 501 CrMo frame, MTB gears and bars, 18 speed transmission including Shimano SIS thumb shifters.

Previous owner hardly used it, maybe done 50 miles in 15 years. Sitting in his garage the rest of the time. Tyres still look like new. Bought yesterday evening for beer money. Rode it back from Penicuik, very comfy ride, brakes good, gear indexing quite crisp mostly. Needs mudguards, slicker tyres, maybe nicer pedals, rear rack, perhaps swap the straight bars for either drops or north road bars.

Currently sitting in the stair, but not for long: went to see a lock up garage yesterday evening too. Get the keys on Friday. and will finally have somewhere to put my bike stuff, tools, etc. and work on them properly.

The only risk is my bike collection will now start in earnest: but it will be so much fun!

Next on the wish list:
- Bike Friday, Airnimal, Dahon Speed TR or similar.
- 'Classic' steel framed drop bar racer.
- Kiddyback tandem
- Long tail cargo bike/Xtracycle

Alkso can finally build up my 'expedition tourer' from the old Tange MTB frame I've been working on.

There's a Fujin SL for sale up in Aberdeen I think, too, mentioned in Velovision. I really really really don't need a Fujin, or a Paper Bicycle, or a Surly LHT, or a Quest velocimobile. :-/

"
I’ve always had just one bike – never felt the need for more than one, save for lately with the purchase of the Madsen.
"
"
and finally arrived at the bikes I still have today. A 1999 Univega Modo Vincere and a Marin Juniper Trail (which now has an Xtracycle conversion). Toss in a tall bike, a cheap fixed gear, and a polo bike and there is very little room in my garage.
"

yes Kappers - indeed the colleague struggled to get the words 'disc brakes' out - to me an abomination but druidh had all the counter arguments

Picked up my Crossroads from The Bike Chain yesterday. They have converted it from being nightmare Nexus 8 hub gear failure into a single speed look-a-like with a 3 speed Sturmey Archer set up - took it along the north edinburgh path to muirhouse then up to Roseburn and eventually to Balerno. It is a heavy bike - but enjoyable to ride and hopefully robust and low maintennance now it no longer has nexus 8 hubgears, looks very straightforward. I was bowling along saying hello to all and sundry with a big cheesy grin, despite the rain. Will be in the Pentlands marshalling the Triathlon on it this Tues evening. I am at The Howe blowing a whistle.

'reached n' HA!

Ive cut the stable down to two bikes, the crosser is at home, the bent with me but when I get back I have serious expansion plans. The list goes something like

paper bike
folder
beater
folding bent
bent trike
bakfeitz (although I already have a great trailer)
carbon racer
penny

notice the lack of tourer or mountain bike, gotta leave room for seconds!

In fact the list for bents is pretty mental.

No-Com
Grasshopper
Gaucho
ICE
velomobile
carbon highracer (just to play with the roadies)
LWB monster

that Dawes Clubman looks like their answer to Genesis Croix de Fer I would like one of them. Was in pub with colleague last night who acquired one from a workshop style shop in darkest Fife for £800. I think that is a bargain for that particular vehicle.

I have 2 bikes, a very cheap 200 quid mountain bike that has done oh about 200 miles in 3 years and just takes up space in the garage. I bought these (my wife has one too) to try get my wife into cycling, turns out she doesn't like cycling very much :(
My other bike is a very expensive Cervelo carbon road bike which doubles as my commuter/weekend fun bike and is used all year round rain/hail/snow. Reckon it's cheaper to run all year round in maintenance etc, than it would be to buy a semi-decent winter bike.

So in my case n really does equal 1.

And that top tube is a few degrees off straight! Not to mention the "airstream" typeface is well out of place on something trying to evoke English 1950s "clubman" type ride.

How can it be 'retro' with blooming carbon forks and a 'leather look' saddle?

I'd like a Dawes Super Galaxy, a Pashley Sovereign, A Pashley Roadster, various surly, that one in the bike chain just for sand, a specialized roubaix....

Today I used a Brompton S2L-X superlight to and from work then a Pashley with a kid trailer to take 15 kg of SQA exam scripts to the post office. On the way back I picked up two kids at school and a third at the nursery.

Between the post office and the school a guy in car told me there was nobody in the trailer.

Even my 3 Bromptons are quite different from each other and are used for different things. I'll be going for a ruby in town tomorrow so I could use the M6R with SON lights or, if it's not raining, the S2L-X with battery lights.

Still wondering about carrying one kid's bike on the trailer as far as the school. I might need to do that next year.

I'm getting by with two bikes - one for Glentress (which is also doing commuter duty just now) and one for everywhere else.

Supposing bikes were free and we had a double garage, I'd certainly own a velomobile, an ordinary recumbent trike, a rediculously powerful cargo bike, a dedicated urban bike, and a civilised bike (Pashley style) along with trailers such that any one could tow at least one of the others... ;-)

I'd be perfectly happy with one bike, if:
- the weather was always warm and dry
- bike parts didn't wear out
- bikes didn't get stolen
- perfect road surfaces
- didn't need to carry owt
...

then again - I might want to take up mtbing again
