So that's where the Waverley Line ran? I didn't realise. Shame because it's a nice path.

The lines of sight are really short - you can encounter other road users coming in from your right even when you're driving through it. I think the filters on the High Street further east are also a problem. I was once pushed along as I waited on my bike to turn right by a car behind me. I don't think the driver even saw me.

On the Google map link the cycle path shows up as a tree-lined alternative running north/south. I'd be tempted to try to incorporate that into my route instead. But that's just how I'd do it based on my experience of Dalkeith drivers. It's a shame the NCN has to go through there.

Yes it is.

"or Edinburgh"

Travel to work area + 'nice places nearby to cycle to'.

Many years ago MidL was given money to build a cyclists' flyover at Sherrifhall. (That was before they put the lights in so it was even worse!)

Some time later they had to give the money back.

In the last few years when living out at Eskbank, I have tackled the council about the roundabout at Eskbank Toll. This is a sometimes busy roundabout with 6 feeder roads. This leads to two main problems:

1) drivers rush onto the roundabout, especially when it's busy. Some of the junctions are hidden from the next one along. So this makes for tricky and stressful encounters for cyclists and also drivers.

2) the nature of the roundabout with its multiple exits and general layout means that it is difficult for pedestrians to get around safely. Of course many motorists don't appreciate this. The best time is when the lollypop folk are there to help people cross (even adults appreciate this).

I have suggested pedestrian crossings, stop lines and methods to slow the traffic. However the council have said that they have investigated this and found no solution that would be permissable. However in my limited experience they are not a can-do organisation (I appreciate that they have constraints).

So any suggestions that I could forward to them would be appreciated.
