Crowriver - agreed - my kids object to the hills, but it is a quiet lane between Carlops and Ninemileburn and from Carlops I think u can avoid the A-roads and cut over to West Linton.

On another route - the Pentlands Park people have connected Harperig Reservoir to the Cauldstane Slap Path by cutting a new route south of the reservoir. This is flatter for kids but very very long.I was out there yesterday about 7.30 water calm and mirror like. The anglers have a log cabin, there are boats [for hire??] If only Cairns Farm re-opened there farm shop.

gembo, I have to say seeing the route on Cyclestreets has put me right off visiting. Too much hill climbing to take the kids. Too many A roads.

THe route is fine for walking but I would not go that way even if MTBing - the first bit when the tarmac ends is very boggy [with an old railway carriage in middle of a field] - you then meet up with a bit of road that turning right would take you back to A70, turning left is again OK walking or cycling until you get to the top of the pass, after that the descent is rock-hopping and bike carrying. If absolutely set on cycling over the Pentlands to this farmshop then there are other routes available - e.g. West Kip but they come out nearer Penicuik.

I fancy cycling to the one in Fife - Pillars of Hercules [all vegetarian apparently]

I am happy any time to walk that route to Whitmuir, even stopping at the Allan Ramsay Hotel in Carlops (under new management] coming back via ninenileburn and West Kip from Balerno village roughly 20 miles round trip

@kaputnik I've not been over that way for years but i don't expect it's changed much. MTB definitely.

And +1 for Whitmuir. Feels like proper farm with ducks, hens, pigs, sheep-dog etc. but without the bad smells. They're getting ready for the Highland Show:

"Apart from virtually all the food being organic, we are working with 15 farms and around half a dozen small producers to bring the menu to life. The financial support from Food for Life Soil Association Scotland and Scottish Borders Council have emboldened us to take the risk, so all we can do now is hope you come and eat and tell everyone you know to come and eat! We are next to the Rural Craft Village at the East Gate." (from their newsletter).

Has anyone ridden the bit between the Balerno Reservoirs and Carlops to know what sort of bike it is suitable for?

To my mind it would be MTB but it may have changed since last time I was up there.

"Whitmuir is a small family farm with a big welcome AND a fabulous food hall and farm shop, licensed restaurant and art gallery."

Haven't actually been but saw it in Joanna Blythman's food review yesterday.

20 miles or so - depending on where you start and which route -

http://edinburgh.cyclestreets.net/journey/835262

And it's mostly downhill coming back!
