Yep, that is my route into town from Gorebridge. A7, past Dobbies, up to Gilmerton, Cameron Toll, through the Meadows, Lothian Road and on towards the Western. Not a bad route, I tend to find the hills are worse on the way home.

Hmmm so via Gilmerton sounds like worth trying. I come into town from near Borthwick so am fairly flexible on approach routes but have always stuck to the A7 once inside the bypass.

Thanks for the tip!

amir The route via Gilmerton is okay

I'll second that. Even though you go higher it's graded better. Going by ERI means a shorter but steeper climb which can be avoided heading out that way. In fact the ERI route has two climbs... on Gilmerton it just ramps up at a nice level.

I find the long route very relaxing in the morning and the extra miles help to keep me fitter. When I go the short way via Gilmerton, I head out on Lasswade Rd to the A7 and then chug along there to the Dobbies roundabout. That way seems safer as the A7 is flat and wide whereas Melville Road is hilly and bendy. Also means a left turn at the Dobbies Rdbt at least on the way into town.

Alternatively you can make up a long but largely traffic free route using the NCN route no1 via Whitecraigs, River Esk, and the Innocent.

This is what he is leaning towards but it is a huge detour. I spent some time looking at alternatives and it is amazingly difficult to get directly from Gorebridge/Mayfield/Newtongrange/Eskbank/Dalkeith to central Ed without mixing it up with HGVs at some point.

Must say I'm not too hopeful about what sort of cycle provision will be left once the borders railway is built. I use the path from where it begins by the college right up to Sheriffhall. Won't be fun having to hack through Eskbank instead.

I cycle in from Eskbank. The route via Gilmerton is okay - well at least it avoids the big roundabout. If your colleague is very traffic averse, you can cycle on the pavement from near Dobbies up to just short of Gilmerton. Alternatively you can make up a long but largely traffic free route using the NCN route no1 via Whitecraigs, River Esk, and the Innocent. There are plenty of alternatives that can be built around this and they avoid the Gilmerton hill :)

I think MidL realised it was going to cost more than originally budgeted for so they didn't take the money - or paid it back if it was actually transferred.

The roundabout is better than it used to be now there are lights - but...

There is still no decent cycle route between Edinburgh and Midlothian.

At one time there was to be by one by the side of the Borders line. Don't know if that us still in the plan.

Discussion at work with colleague keen on cycling in from Dalkeith but understandably unkeen about tackling Sheriffhall roundabout. Someone mentioned that there was a plan to build a bridge for bikes and peds and sure enough 800K was allocated to do just that back in 2004

http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/edinburgh/Roundabout-route-to-1m-cycle.2550040.jp

Anyone know what happened and where the cash went? I think I will be bothering Midlothian council about this if the money just evaporated...
