I suppose that might depend how tight you were going to be about illegal. I had an empty scoosher for a few weeks and occasionally it takes me a while to replace sidelight or number plate bulbs. I don't use it much so I don't always notice these things right away and the memsahib forgets to tell me.

Another letter in today's Herald about the failings of the Museum Shaped Object on the Clyde.

Isn't it something like one in 20 cars as driven is in some way illegal (unlicenced, uninsured, etc)?

But then, something like a third of HGVs stopped are found to fail safety regs so I suppose you could argue 5% is not too bad...

Hmmm, occasionally I've been pulled in for a check on the car at night. They do check the car, VED disk, lights, windscreen scoosher and so on. I suspect if they smell alcohol when you wind down the window they would go on to test you for that but they wouldn't smell it off me so I don't know. I've only ever been pulled in like this after 2300 hrs. I've also been pulled in for real things like a dud number plate light and again that's only been after closing time.

Once I was pulled in for emitting a lot of smoke but I was able to tell them that I was picking up a new(er) model the following day.

i think, all of central scotland traffic cars have anpr.
perhaps the best ant drink and drug driving stuff comes from australia. google TAC everybody hurts. be warned, accidents will make you wince, you might cry. But, i fear we cant show it in uk for fear of offending someone !are the police still allowed to stop motorists without cause, ie does there have to be a violation and hence, just cause ?

chdot - Edinburgh is already ringed by Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. They are also positioned along the trunk road network (e.g. on approaches to the Forth Road Bridge). Some police traffic cars have these cameras, which are linked to the motor insurance and DVLA databases, which allows them to stop uninsured or unregistered vehicles. The real problem is unlicensed drivers, as this is more difficult to detect using technology.

"do 'illegal' drivers not drive more carefully and is that not why they are so hard to detect?"

Maybe need some of those cameras you get with Congestion Charging...

Illegal drivers just don't stop following an 'accident' that's why they are hard to detect!

Thinking about my 'fake licence' or 'no licence' comment...... do 'illegal' drivers not drive more carefully and is that not why they are so hard to detect?

Black Astra ****WPR. Follows me through a red (I was on amber) and goes head to head with traffic on Hamilton Place (20.20)- squeezing me to one inch of coming off bike.

I was on tandem already bought by customer so not wanting to put myself at any more risk by putting myself in the way of this bully. He was obviously irked that I wasn't sitting in the 20 minute queue with others in Stockbridge.

Car also had other occupants - maybe making a get away towards East. Didn't get full reg.

I always remember that a fair amount of cars are driven by people who have no llcence or one obtained through fraud ( Ie people sit test on ther behalf).

Nice weather = nasty driving
