"
Fraser Ralston, a forecaster with the Met Office, said that the level of rain Edinburgh experienced over the weekend was not unusual for the summer and said the Capital will "definitely" flood again, although there is no way of predicting when.

Mr Ralston said: "It's not unusual to get this sort of heavy downpour in the summer, but a lot of the time it occurs in the countryside where no-one but the farmer notices.

Youth Inter-Regional Cycle Championships that I was marshalling at in Coupar Angus were rained off during the boys' race after 4.5 of 9 laps. Shame for them, but there were getting to be too many falls and accidents.

Arrived back to Haymarket to the storm so took sanctuary in the bike shelter while I waited for it to ease a bit.

This photo summed it up. Taxi driver seemed reluctant to pull the passenger door up to the bit of the pavement that wasn't under water for the old dear.

The house right across the road from me was hit by lightning this afternoon. We were sitting in the front room, then suddenly the place lit up with a huge lightning flash and the most enormously loud CRACK that made me jump out of my skin. Then a half second later some very loud thunder.
"Wow, that was REALLY close", we thought, "could almost have been across the road!" and went back to what we'd been doing; until a few minutes later three fire engines turned up, blue lights flashing, and disgorged firemen who went charging into the houses across the road. Then a vast fire engine cherry picker turned up and dangled a fireman over the roof, presumably looking for a fire. No fire, no casualties though. Then they all went away again. Excitement over.

Grahams the plumbers (between us and Recombodna) is closed due to flooding. There seems to be a collector for the storm sewer system outside them, that was making a lot of noise last night, don't know if that was related or not (ie were they just inundated by water off the road (i was mainly looking out the back, but the road didn't seem that bad), or if the system was flooded.

"The drains have completely clogged up and I've been told there's an underground river system below us."

http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/edinburgh/Panic-stations-as-flash-floods.6798671.jp

Think Council/Scottish Water will have to look at drains/capacity issues.

I think the "river" was culverted when the railway was built and probably connected to the sewer rather than continuing to the Jordan Burn.

I doubt if anything would have been able to cope with the amount of water coming down Comiston Road. A lot continued down Morningside Road and flooded around Maxwell Street but dispersed much more quickly.

Notice how nearly every pic of the floods has a cyclist in it? Maybe there _are_ more of us about :)

But how clueless are the guys in the flooded VW? ""The water was coming up in the van. ... Then the engine cut off. It was smoking." Wouldn't turning the engine off have been a good idea? (probably just steam, but still...)

"presumably it would have gone down the storm sewers if they were not already full?"

Yes, but, perhaps.

I think B. St. (and other places) doesn't have enough drainage gullies to deal wIth the 'once in a hundred year' events that seem to be happening more often.

A few years ago some gullies in various parts of Edinburgh were frequently/permanently blocked. The reason/excuse was that drain cleaners couldn't get to them because of parked cars.

Now it's much more common for the council to give notice of parking suspension a few days ahead to make sure cars aren't in the way when the cleaning lorry cones round.

storm sewer lid also observed ajar at Hutchingson Crossways - people out by it, making sure no one drove in.

That's what happened at Napier (can't remember where I read that), but not Balcarres St.

Theory here (from someone with some expertise) is that the storm sewer system was surcharged, which caused covers to come off in some areas and also explains some of the flooding.

Just been along Balcarres St. which has been cleared of water (presumably they just pumped it onto the railway?) Lots of grit/stones all over the road and quite a few cars sitting at funny angles.

Back mostly un-rained on, though I got wet feet passing through one flooded bit as they were dipping in the water on the bottom of the pedal stroke :-o then got properly wet climbing the hill back to the house, must be Friday, pouring with perspiration, out of control breathing and screaming legs :-/
Still TGIF and I don't mind if we get a re-show of the blunder and frightening as I'd like to see it this time! :-)

Ginormous puddle across entirity of eastbound half of Melville Drive level with easternmost bus stop. If there's lots of traffic possibly worth going along the terraces instead.
