I've done two of their tours during the Fringe and very much enjoyed both of them. I should do the other ones some time.

Came back to this thread quite by accident. There is a nice book produced by Greenyonder Tours called "Hidden Gardens of the Royal Mile". I bought a copy of it at Christmas.

Oh, there's the private garden on Castle Terrace, which is utterly the wrong direction, but you can get keys for it.

I might mention the gravestone idea and see what they think! Will have a gander at the George IV garden as well.

Checked out Trunk's Close and Dunbar's Close last night. Both are great. Trunk's is quite modern, probably quieter, but smaller and more enclosed (less good light), but it's closer to the venues. Dunbar's is lovely, bit bigger, so more space to work with, and the light is a lot better. Bit more of a hike down the road though. Hmmmm. Now, wonder if I can get the keys to any og the nice private gardens...

There is a garden (visible over the parapet opposite Pizza Express / Ondine)just off George IV bridge - not sure if it might be part of the Supreme Courts, and hence inaccessible to public, but you might get some shots there ?

10 seconds from the Registry office too.

Slightly leftfield, but how about the Canongate Kirk ? Perhaps too many gravestones for that particular ceremony (!), but could be done in an interesting/arty way.

Thanks both - gonna take a spin by on the way home tonight, will specifically check out those three (Trunk's Close looks good - modern, funky - on Google images, and Dunbar's Close looks stunning!).

I would recommend Dunbar's Close garden, just down from the Christmas shop. It's absolutely beautiful, and hardly anybody knows it's there. Chessel's Court is quite nice too, but not perhaps suitable for photos.

Scottish Book Trust (behind John Knox's House on the High Street, think it's Trunk's Close) has an attractive contemporary garden. Not at the top of the Mile but not too far down either. Quite light with trees. Open to the public.

Quick query, and as ever expecting this board to be ultra-useful (following the Art Deco help).

I'm taking wedding photos for the friend of a friend in a little over three weeks. Wedding is at the registry office, reception at the Scotsman. Perfectly happy having photos taken walking through the throng of the Royal Mile at festival time (should be good fun actually); but also looking for a quiet spot for some 'family shots'.

Now I know there are a lot of little gardens just off the Royal Mile, some public, some private - obviously I'm looking for public ones. I was going to walk up at lunchtime today for a gander at some at the top (if there are any). Anyone know the locations of some?
