This will be the budget handled by the Transport, Infrastructure and Environment Committee

So most of the budget for "Improving the transport network" is actually flood protection stuff, which will presumably be double counted under some other heading (e.g. "Enviromental").

"I wonder how much will be improving road safety and how much will be promoting walking and cycling..."

It's an interesting (but not contradictory) coupling.

'Improving road safety' tends to mean physical measures, 20mph zones etc. - perhaps even "Accident Blackspot - Removal".

Promoting walking and cycling hardly gets anything spent on it (I know - I've had tiny amounts of money over the years for things like leaflets).

The budget summary is here -

http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/internet/Council/Council_tax_and_finance/Council_budget/CEC_council_budget_2010_11

The complete list under the "Improving the transport network" heading is -

• £2million for projects to improve road safety and to promote walking and cycling
• £18m to complete the flood protection works on the Braid Burn
• £25m for phase 2 of the Water of Leith flood protection scheme
• £2.8m for a new public transport route linking Craigmillar and the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary
• Commitment to keeping Lothian Buses in public ownership

The flood protection (I always call it flood prevention - but that's wishful thinking!!) schemes have great potential for improving path networks, but some of the stuff that is actually being done - e.g. street lamps IN (quite narrow) paths shows there's not a lot of joined-up-thinking.

The "new public transport route" has been 'coming' for YEARS. It's basically a buses only road between the hospital and Greendykes which should have been in place before the RIE was opened. In theory it would become Tramline 3.

It was supposed to have walk/cycle paths with it, we'll see (or not).

"this Administration is providing an additional £2million for projects to improve road safety and to promote walking and cycling."

I wonder how much will be improving road safety and how much will be promoting walking and cycling...
