"that'll be General Motors then."

Good one. Oddly, city and suburbs still full of new cars. It's the motorway adverts for healthcare that really jar. (and of course an old favourite: call 1-800-who's the daddy?' for DNA testing...)

Science centre also had a rather interesting road design and safety exhibit. All sponsored by the construction industry, but fairly educational none-the-less - interesting stuff on water permeable concrete and tarmac versus 'old-style'.

Yebbut at the same time there aren't many moving, roaring dinosaurs in Edinburgh. If you discount Alex Salmond.

Visited the Detroit Science Centre yesterday (moving, roaring dinosaurs!), and noticed bike lockers adjacent to the carpark. then spotted a bike with child trailer parked across the street, outside the Detroit Instute of Art (Diego Rivera murals!), and then what looked like a big sister towing siblings in a bike trailer around the corner. How often do you see two in use bike trailers within 5 min in central downtown Edinburgh? More Detroit stories and pics to come...

"£300 per year!!! A parking permit only cost £80 a year... "

I am guessing not too many people will take up this particular offer which is probably what they want since bike lockers that are instantly permanently blocked are not much good to anyone except for the lucky locker winners.

"£300 per year!!! A parking permit only cost £80 a year... "

Parking permit pricing seems to be a bit more complicated than that, but the most expensive is still only £336.

Some pretty cheap prices there if you have a small engined/low polluting car.

Sounds like Bikeaway (as used in Stirling, Dundee & other places) Users are registered and receive general key for standard padlock (on all lockers) Remove padlock and use own lock to secure locker.

Staff have key to override system that unlocks door whilst leaving own lock in place

Experience of lockers over 20 years of review suggest that a better solution for many places is the secure compound, with card access - sell 50% more passes than spaces.

Some interesting developments re-'security' and parked bikes though, any bags left on bikes not tolerated. Lockers to be v closely monitored.

I was at Waverley yesterday.

MASSES of bikes - lots 'hidden' in the gloom by Platform 2 under the station refurb canopy.

"
Dear all

The Council now has four cycle lockers operating at the bus station adjacent to St.Andrews Square offering short to long term hire options as follows:
£3 per day, no deposit required, key held by security

£15 a week, £5 deposit for key, key held by owner

£30 per month, £5 deposit for key, key held by owner

£300 per year, £5 deposit for key, key held by owner

Moneys are deposited through the hire of a locker.

To hire a locker or for more information about them please ask at the bus station information office.

I would be grateful if you could help publicise this facility as we are keen to promote its use. Good uptake could lead to an expansion or consideration for other similar locations. We will be adding this information to the cycling and bus station sections of the Council's website.
