Thanks for that chdot. I saw a few mentions of witch burnings in Nigel Tranter's "East Lothian" book. He seemed to think they were inexplicable abberations but I think it was the local ministers that encouraged it. Maybe I'll find out at Dirleton.

"
Come along to Dirleton Castle on Sunday 7th August, from 12 noon until 4:00 pm and meet the infamous witch-finder John Kincaid on his search to root out heresy. Witness the trial of a local witch, find out about the questionable methods and tools used to identify witches and see the brutal results of a guilty verdict.

Alison Stalker, Events Assistant, Historic Scotland said: “East Lothian was embroiled in a series of witch trials in the 17th century. Superstition and mistrust resulted in widespread accusations of people being in league with the devil. Discover all about this fascinating, yet horribly brutal period in Scottish history at Dirleton Castle, one of the oldest surviving castles in Scotland.”

The cost of the event is included in the price of admission: Adult £5 Concession £4 Child £3. Free to Historic Scotland members.
