Hi there everyone, another update on how the project is going, so far I've had two volunteers for the project already; this is brilliant, but obviously, the offer is still there to take part in this project if they wish! Please feel free to PM me and we can arrange a meeting!
Thanks for your help,
Bill

I suspect that on this list the main 'cycling injuries' are less likely to be caused by sport cycling, but stupidity - either from that strap on the luggage going into the front spokes, or the action of another road user being detrimental to the subject, or their cycle.

Probably more likely to get responses from Road cc forum or something with a bias to cycle sport.

Hi everyone, just wanted to update everybody on the project. I haven't had much response yet from anybody regarding volunteering for the project; thus, things are a little slow just now. If anyone is interested in taking part, please, please PM me and we can work something out!
Thanks for your help,

@Kim, again this is a preliminary study in the first instance, the time scale between injury and the time when the blood is taken is not as important just now; as long as the volunteer is still technically injured. Every injury would be considered for the project, but in any further research will consider much tighter time scales.

Are you looking for people who have suffered injury within a specific time scale? With in day of the injury, or weeks or months?

Hi there everyone, I'm Bill, thank you very much for your interest in the project! I'd be happy to answer anybody's questions in regards to my research.

The basic aim of the research is to determine whether or not a protein in the blood (in this case one called AGP) can be used to diagnose, or potentially differentiate between different sports injuries, of which the sport we chose was cycling and mountain biking.

Past research has shown that this protein has been used effectively to diagnose early stages of breast cancer, and has been used to differentiate different types of liver diseases. We hope to see if the same is possible in sports injuries.

There is the potential that the levels of this protein in the blood can be used to chart a persons recovery from a sporting injury; the levels of the protein are exponentially higher when the body is injured and these levels decrease as the body recovers.

This is a preliminary study in the first instance so types of injury are not necessary (if any further research is carried out, then it might be a possibility), the only criteria is that they occurred when a volunteer was cycling and have been officially diagnosed by a doctor (so that we can look for any differences between injuries, a fracture and a ligament tear for example).

Should anybody have any questions or comments please feel free to ask! Please PM me and I'll send you the Information Sheet if you would like? Thank you all for your help!

Bill

If I understand his email correctly, it looks like he's trying to establish whether there is a correlation between already identified injuries and elevated protein levels in the blood. If causality is determined from this study, they would be able to use protein levels in blood as an accurate indicator of injury.

Whether he's looking for injuries of a specific calibre or not, it's not really that clear.

I've got a knee that flares up (and is particular bad at the moment) and I work near Sighthill anyway, so I might drop the guy a quick line.

I'd be willing to bet he is more interested in a knackered knee from 'over doing it' than road rash from over 'cooking it'.

I think that the key word here is "diagnose", rather than "inspect". Could it be that at a molecular level the blood carries different information for a ligament injury, a hairline fracture, or a muscle injury? And is that information different in the shoulder or the thigh or the ankle?

I assume if proffesional athletes get a minor injury they may not be willing to admit it straight away, and this may help in diagnosing something or give a clue if an injury is not repairing but getting worse?

In another sport/hobbie I do, when someone is injured the biggest sign is an unwillingness to admit it.

How does this work? I have never needed a blood test to diganose a cycling injury more quickly - the fact I had bounced off a road and been in considerable agony has always been enough to alert me.

Good luck with any research though!

Surely just give the Police and Ambulance paramedics a card with the details on, and then they tell the cyclist the nearest A&E is this guys address. Hey presto all cycle accidents add to his research. At least if they don't make a full recovery, due to delayed treatment, they can read his work when published and see their names at the end of the peice.

"
Hi there, I was wondering if it were possible if you could help me?

My name is William Surradge and I am a Postgraduate Masters Research student at Edinburgh Napier University. My project is looking at a protein in the blood of cyclists who have recently suffered an injury in their sport; in order to determine if we can use this protein to diagnose sports injuries quicker, and can then chart the cyclists recovery from their injury.

It is here I wonder if you could help me? I'm in the process of recruiting volunteers who have recently suffered a cycling injury for this project, and was wondering if it were possible if you could pass this information onto your members? I include in this email a Volunteer Information Sheet, which has more information on the project and what would be expected from project volunteers.

Any volunteers would need to come to the Sighthill Campus of Edinburgh University, where they will need to fill in a questionnaire and will have the oppertunity to ask any questions they may have about the project. After this, volunteers will be asked to provide a small blood sample (around 5 ml) which will then be used to look at the desired protein. The whole process from start to finish should only take about half an hour.

Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions regarding the project; my email address is 06017014@live.napier.ac.uk .
Thank you so much for your time and help, I really appreciate it!
Bill Surradge
"

That's it I know no more.

Well there was a PDF attachment but I'm sure he'd send it to you.
