When we were coming back from England last month I noticed cameras every 100 yards to so on the Birmingham bit of the M6. They were at the side of the road, not on gantries like the the average speed cameras.

I had been driving on that road in October and didn't notice the extra cameras.

Sadly, on the A9 I doubt they would help with the main problem which is overtaking not really sustained speeding. If the average speed is set by caravans travelling at 40 or 50 for miles you could still get people overtaking at 80 and not exceeding an average of 60. Unless the cameras are really close together, which would be very expensive.

You're tracked in lots of ways anyway. For instance if your mobile is on whilst driving, the signal it emits to each mast can be used to (relatively) accurately place you at any given time by the phone networks, or anyone connected to them.

Obviously it's too much hassle in reality to spy on people this way, but you'd be surprised to know, probably, that your position can be nailed to within 50m when you're driving around town, just because you didn't switch your phone off...

There's no doubt Av. Speed Cameras work, really really well, and perfect for things such as roadworks where you are trying to protect people...

...but just still find them a wee bit creepy. Feel very surveilled when down in Ayrshire, every bit of road round prestwick seems to have em.

I know know that every CCTV camera in Embra now has ANPR, but it just doesn't feel as overt.

goodness, they will be putting devices in hgv to moniter their entire journy next.......
doubleplusgood to quote a mr orwell ! Av speed certainly do seem to work, both cases,(A77 and A/M80 ) but why only on restricted speed sections ? Why not on 70 mph sections ? Camera technology already exists to differentiate between different classes of vehicles, lorry bus, car, which have different max speed limits on a particular road . Its annoying when you do exit an av speed controled zone, the mases just seem to think that the limit has increased to 500mph again !
Was back at work yesterday and back on the road, hgv mode. I had forgotten exactly how bad peoples driving is !

"
ROAD safety charities have called for average speed cameras to be installed on more routes in Scotland after figures show they have been hugely successful in controlling speed and maintaining safety on one of the country’s biggest motorway engineering projects.
