As a concept, of course, we should all try and be safe. However, I don't think the second comment you include above from Disability Sport Wales is ureasonable - every road user has a responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users, including cyclists.</p> <p>I would question whether a press release about this incident was the right place to include such a comment, but suspect this organisation felt it had to include some sort of road safety message in anything it issued. </p> http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/topic.php?id=3664#post-38479 Thu, 18 Aug 2011 09:41:38 +0000 Wilmington's Cow 38479@http://citycyclingedinburgh.info/bbpress/ <p>Following on from Dave's comment on the Simon Richardson thread about Disability Sport Wales' comment that, "This happens very often in cycling."</p> <p>(given I thought this might spark a debate I thought a new thread, rather than it taking place over there, might be better).</p> <p>That particular quote appears to have gone from their press release now, but there is <em>this</em>, "Gerwyn Owen, of Disability Sport Wales, said the incident highlighted the need for everybody to look after cyclists on the road and for cyclists to take care themselves."</p> <p>Again we don't know the circumstances, but the release itself refers to a driver having been arrested (not just <em>helping with enquiries</em>, actually <em>arrested</em>), so just how does that highlight the need for <em>cyclists to take care themselves</em>? Are they suggesting that Simon was somehow partly to blame? (perhaps he was, we don't know the story, but again, the driver has been <em>arrested</em>). </p>
