I think saying it in the context of a rider being knocked off and the driver 'running away' and then subsequently being arrested is hugely inappropriate even though I take it as read that my safety is primarily my responsibility.

My only caveat would be that the arrest might just be for leaving the scene rather than the incident itself.

"I would question whether a press release about this incident was the right place to include such a comment..."

That's really what my point was. As a concept, of course, we should all try and be safe. But in the context of this being a release specifically about this incident there comes a suggestion that maybe Simon wasn't being safe.

I can't comment on this particular tragic incident as I don't know the details. However, I don't think the second comment you include above from Disability Sport Wales is ureasonable - every road user has a responsibility for their own safety and that of other road users, including cyclists.

I would question whether a press release about this incident was the right place to include such a comment, but suspect this organisation felt it had to include some sort of road safety message in anything it issued.

Following on from Dave's comment on the Simon Richardson thread about Disability Sport Wales' comment that, "This happens very often in cycling."

(given I thought this might spark a debate I thought a new thread, rather than it taking place over there, might be better).

That particular quote appears to have gone from their press release now, but there is this, "Gerwyn Owen, of Disability Sport Wales, said the incident highlighted the need for everybody to look after cyclists on the road and for cyclists to take care themselves."

Again we don't know the circumstances, but the release itself refers to a driver having been arrested (not just helping with enquiries, actually arrested), so just how does that highlight the need for cyclists to take care themselves? Are they suggesting that Simon was somehow partly to blame? (perhaps he was, we don't know the story, but again, the driver has been arrested).
