The A70 is a very long road (a lang whang) - Edinburgh to Ayr. From Balerno to Carnwath it is straightish with good sightlines, though the cars sometimes pelt along it has few vehicles. Once you cross the M74 however, you are then in bandit country. Ex-presso [sic] still £1.20 in the apple pie bakery of Carnwath. Guy from Law Wheelers 9South Lanarkshire village with own bike club] was having a roll with bacon and egg) but he was building up the energy to go to Biggar Show. I erroneously admired his tourer. A correction was issued - It is a 531. It had narrow flat strips of aluminium for mudguards

Anth's onto something here. There are presumably a fair number of bored young men living in rural Scotland, who have nothing better to do than drive their vehicles as fast as possible for a few thrills. Also given the distances to local pubs in many rural communities there must be a bit more drink driving than in the heavily policed towns and cities.

Maybe that half a million could have been spent putting up some "SLOW DOWN" signs and a few speed cameras? Or is that far too sensible?

Or...

"Five A-class routes in Scotland have been rated as having high risk drivers in a new roads atlas"

Yes, sure, road design can be a contributory factor to things, but if a road is twisty, or the camber is off, or sigh lines are poor... SLOW THE HECK DOWN!

I've said that before and had someone say "But what if you don't know the road..." To which the simple answer is, if you don't know the road SLOW THE HECK DOWN!

Collins atlas rates five Scottish A roads 'high risk'
Five A-class routes in Scotland have been rated as a high risk to safety in a new roads atlas.

The 2012 Collins Big Road Atlas shows the A708, A937, A70, A809 and A81 as the most dangerous based on serious and fatal accidents between 2007 and 2009.

Solution = spend more money on roads. Straighter, wider and faster roads = safer.

SNP spending £500,000 working out the best way to spend more money on the A82.
