I'm sure it was the Embassy that Carlton Reid went off on one about a wee while back. I certainly got an email about this to citycycling quite some time ago - looks like they've got enough momentum up now to go for it.

It'll be interesting to see what happens and if it actually looks like breaking down the whole 'tribes' thing.

Yes, it looks as though they are trying to provide a distinctive voice. Currently much of the cycle infrastructure design expertise is locked inside organisations like Sustrans and local authorities.

If their aim is to make conditions better so that non-cyclists start cycling then that is laudable. Different emphasis from the CTC, which is quite effective in representing existing cyclists, ie. "nutters" like us who happily cock a snoot at motorised death on the roads and put up with the obstacle course/cycle slalom aesthetics of Sustrans routes.

How will the 'Embassy' link up with local campaign groups like Spokes, I wonder?

"The Cycling Embassy of GB's website is planned to store a comprehensive online library of bicycle infrastructure design guidance from around the world."

http://www.bikebiz.com/news/read/bike-bloggers-create-cycling-embassy-of-great-britain/011809

I see point about OSM - that app has been very good to confirm and compare routes. So fair comment.

Sustrans wanted to be a publisher and recoup some of the costs of mapping I suppose.

In comparison I generally take an OS map from the library as I only have a couple of Sustrans maps and they designed for staying on a route rather than 'stravaiging'.

I also use OSM quite a bit to look at journeys now ... thanks to the link here (yes I should bookmark)

"I'd say they were approachable enough"

Wasn't questioning any personnel - individually or collectively.

It's a largish organisation with a lot to be pleased about, but it also can be a bit restrained. At times it has been, pioneering and pro-active. It remains fairly progressive - and does particularly good work with individual schools and the whole Safe Routes activities generally.

OK this is slightly personal (because of my mapping interests) but I'm disappointed at its reluctance to embrace OSM. It could have encouraged its members to go out and improve the mapping at an early stage.

The CTC was quite enthusiastic early on, but didn't actually follow through to enthuse its members as much as it might have.

The recent Sustrans' iPhone app (produced in Edinburgh by the person who did the CycleStreets one) is based on Ordnance Survey mapping (which users can't update - as they can with OSM) and doesn't have a journey planner built in.

Another sign of Sustrans going its own way...

Hmmm.

As the web expands so does the amount of cycling info.

chodt 'At various times it's (Sustrans) been 'resented' and often seems to remain aloof.'

Leant me a map you know from offices in central Edinburgh. So I'd say they were approachable enough as unlike a web org they do have people locally.
'We' know that totally segregated paths are not possible or needed and can increase other risks. But as a way of getting new people interested they do work in places and remind people that you don't have to do the PBP to be a cyclist.

At the software level it's generally a bad thing, think of it like competing standards, if you choose the wrong standard you might get stuck with a Betamax.

At the distribution level it adds choice like if Garry fisher left trek and started making his own bikes again. Though it can dilute support ... So I suppose thats a better analogy to cycling orgs.

Or as they'd say in Linux land Forkers...

These organisations have a lot in common with Open source software, one doesn't like an update or new direction the developer or organisation is going go back to the earlier source code and fork your own version. Original dev stops responding or gets to removed from the user group (aloof?), grab the source code and fork.

"
smsm1:

GB Cycling Embassy to launch in London 3rd Sept http://t.co/0TJvIoX - come along, and bring your bike

Original Tweet: http://twitter.com/smsm1/status/105175042194808832
"

At various times 'cycling' has been criticised for having 'too many organisations'. This was usually disingenuously used as an excuse (by governments particularly) for not 'engaging'.

There have been various bodies for different aspects of 'sport' - now mostly covered by British Cycling.

The Cyclists' Touring Club used to think it 'spoke' for everyone else, but the rise of local campaign groups (Spokes in Edinburgh was one of the first) eventually made them realise that there were people who weren't interesting in 'touring' but wanted better conditions.

In recent years the C.T.C. has reinvented itself as the CTC and is a fairly effective UK wide campaigning organisation.

Then along came Sustrans which grew out of the Bristol equivalent of Spokes (Cyclebag). This has probably done more than any other organisation to encourage 'ordinary' people to cycle.

At various times it's been 'resented' and often seems to remain aloof.

And now there's something else -

"
Manifesto & Mission Statement

An Embassy, free from the burden of history, legacy and ties, created to work in partnership with fellow organisations and charities in Great Britain, mainland Europe and around the world trading ideas and experiences in how to promote cycling and make cycling infrastructure work in urban and rural contexts.
"

http://www.cycling-embassy.org.uk/mission
